Exploring the Essence of Lingnan Culture, Embracing the Wisdom of the Ancients
The 'Great Bay Area ' is a central element of ASJ's educational positioning. The school is committed to nurturing students' national sentiments and places a strong emphasis on the heritage and protection of the Bay Area's cultural roots. The South Yue King Museum (Royal Tomb Exhibition Area), known as a beacon of Lingnan culture and one of its origins, is the first choice for ASJ students to trace and explore Lingnan culture. G7 students at ASJ took the opportunity to deeply explore the historical legacy of the Western Han Nanyue Kingdom, better integrating this study with the unit theme 'From Unity to Integration.' They transformed into 'little archaeology experts,' undertaking challenge-based tasks to conduct a multi-faceted exploration of the unearthed relics and cultural heritage from the tomb of the Nanyue King."
During the field trip, G7 students closely observed the precious collections at the South Yue King Museum (Royal Tomb Exhibition Area), listened attentively to the guides' explanations, and actively completed various immersive challenge tasks.
In the 'Southern Frontier in the Qin and Han Dynasties – Historical Exhibition of the Nanyue Kingdom,' the students tried to understand the artifacts and archaeological materials unearthed from sites and tombs of the Qin and Han periods (especially the Western Han Nanyue period) through the perspective of the Chinese civilization's diversity and unity. They integrated historical knowledge learned in class with the historical records displayed in the exhibition, gaining insights into the pre-Qin Lingnan region, Qin's unification of Lingnan, the establishment of the Nanyue state, the development of Lingnan, and the key historical figures who played crucial roles.
In the 'Treasures of Nanyue – Exhibition of Artifacts Unearthed from the Western Han Nanyue King's Tomb,' the students engaged in immersive experience tasks. Using the rich collection of artifacts from the Nanyue King's tomb in the exhibition hall, they collected relevant archaeological evidence, experiencing the lifestyle and cultural customs of the Lingnan ancestors over two thousand years ago.
Through this exploration, the G7 graders not only explored and pondered the gradual development of the Lingnan region and its eventual integration into a unified multi-ethnic nation, but they also gained a more comprehensive understanding of the political, economic, and cultural aspects of Lingnan two thousand years ago. It is hoped that this exploration will spark in ASJ students an awareness of the protection of Lingnan culture, the continuation of the Bay Area cultural lineage, enrich their national sentiments, and ultimately help them become world citizens as described by the IB cultivation goals - courageous in exploration, knowledgeable, thoughtful, open-minded, and well-rounded.
