In March 2024, ASJ Elementary held a Math Festival with the theme Playing with Math, so let's go into the festival and experience the wonders of math!
Gregory Cheyenne says: Mathematics is a wonderful and crazy subject, full of imagination, fantasy and creativity, which is not limited by the details of the material world, but only by the light of our inner spirit.
Lower School Level
Stimulating students' curiosity about math
The two wonderful activities, "Talking Back" and "Sensing Time", fully reflect the IB cultivation goals, which are to cultivate children to be Thinkers, Inquirers, and Reflective.
"Forward and Backward", a challenge to test everyone's concentration and reverse thinking. It helps everyone improve their number sense and makes math more fun and lively!
"Sensing Time", a wonderful encounter about time and math. We hope that through interesting math games and experiments, we can give you a deep sense of the connection between the passage of time and math, so that you can better understand the concept of time and appreciate the space we live in.
In the graphic guessing session, children are trained to become Communicators, how to accurately and efficiently express and communicate the characteristics of the graphic; in the Memory Challenge, children are Risk-takers, challenging their memories and presenting a collision of thinking and language.
Interview with R. He said that the Math Fest activities were fun, especially sensing time, which was intense and interesting. He enjoyed this activity and is very much looking forward to the next Math Festival activity!
Upper School
Cultivating students' interest in the subject
"Codebreaker" allows students to become a codebreaker, swim in the sea of numbers, experience the connection between numbers and letters, and after a series of operations, find the letters corresponding to the numbers in the codebook, which can be converted into words and then into sentences, combining numbers and language. Students go on to experience math as the language of the world, the poetry of the universe, the art of abstraction, and the aura of wisdom. Students are trained to be Knowledgeable.
Another activity of the Upper School Math Festival, the Math Week Challenge, focuses specifically on the qualities of Inquirers and Risk-takers. The week-long program required students to take the initiative to go to a different place each day to discover a problem, and then to go to the teacher's office to "thrill" them with the answer, which required the courage of risk-takers. These problems tested their ability to use math flexibly, and honed their problem-solving skills. By solving the problems, students actively explore solutions and develop a willingness and ability to explore independently.
The "One Stop to the End" activity is a feast of wisdom that tests students' math knowledge and adaptability. It is not only a challenge to the students' math ability, but also an exercise in logical thinking, quick reaction ability, and teamwork (communicators). The "compare size" activity is a perfect combination of math and strategy. In this session, you will work with your classmates to compare the size of numbers, which is a great test of your team's decision-making ability and risk tolerance, and develops students' strategic thinking and sense of competition (balanced).
Student S, one of the participants of the event, said that the event was a great challenge for him, but also a very rewarding experience. "This math challenge made me feel the fun of learning, and I like to keep exploring the process of solving problems and finding ways to solve them." He said, "I hope that next time it will last longer and give us more time to challenge ourselves."
The success of ASJ Primary's Maths Festival π Day not only stimulated students' interest in mathematics, but also demonstrated the school's philosophy of fostering students' interest in learning in conjunction with the goals of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Cultivator.
In the future, we will continue to organize similar events to provide students with more room for development and challenging opportunities.
