From misery to near miracle, China has brought the spread of COVID-19 to a stunning halt over the last few months.
How did China go from breakdown to breakthrough in a matter of months, becoming a model for the world in how to control a confounding new pandemic?
Yet, like any person, organization or society, a country is a “learning entity.” The fate of any learning entity will depend on how much willingness there is to reflect, inquire, and re-create itself. In effect, how much can we learn from the past, whether from mistakes or successes.
Experts in general agree that China’s early detection and isolation of the virus (e.g., testing, lockdown, social distancing, electronic Healthkit tracking, etc.) were responsible for dramatically reducing COVID-19 cases. However, I suggest something about the united spirit of the Chinese people also played a huge factor in this transformation from exploding pandemic to highly controlled—even manageable—virus.
The answer to China’s unity of action with COVID-19, or any crisis, has much to do with its history as a collective society. For much of China’s history, people were brought up in villages of 500-1,000 people where there was great loyalty to, and intimacy with, the community. Just a few years ago, there were still nearly one million small villages in China (1/3 of the world’s total).
For thousands of years, children in China were brought up in communities in which they generally felt loved and protected, by not just their immediate family but by “the collective.” This phenomenon, along with a comparatively mono-cultural society, has allowed the Chinese people to more easily form alignment in thought and action, and to act as One when the time comes.
Indeed, our Beijing Enlighten School’s core value of “Honest with Self and Enlighten Others, Unity of Knowledge and Action” (修己达人,知行合一 Xiu Ji Da Ren, Zhi Xing He Yi) seeks to recognize and leverage this positive cultural concept. This great learning practice, embedded in ancient Chinese wisdom, guides our curriculum and instruction so that all our students are intimately connected to its source. Honesty with oneself paves the way for individual cultivation, and opens the doors of enlightenment for others.
At the same time, our Social Emotional Learning and character development programming ensures that these core values are promoted through a systematic approach at BES, implemented explicitly through our collaboration with Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence, and implicitly within the entire school culture and environment.
Now, thanks to the collective action of people in China, it is not necessary to wear masks when you go outside. All kindergartens, elementary schools and middle schools in Beijing have restarted, and our BES students can begin their enlightened journey.
And even in this relatively safe environment without enforced mask-wearing, most people in the city adorn masks most of the time, not out of fear or mandate, but it seems more out of the “collective” state of mind which has protected them in the past, and has the power to carry them safely into a yet unknown but promisingly future.
