Helena C.B. Soares
Class of 2021
The University of Newcastle
As an alumni who studied at UISZC for 10 years and graduated with a full IB Diploma I can confidently say I have seen many changes at the school of different natures and levels of success. The school now is almost a completely different place to what it was when i first arrived but as is normal with all things.
I made amazing friends at the school and I’ve met many teachers who’ve truly inspired me, one of them being my 9th to 11th grade English teacher Mr. Forbes who’s University I decided to go to.
The University of Newcastle Australia where I will be studying English Literature and Creative Writing in hopes of pursuing a career in teaching just as he did.
My DP coordinator MS Bozzetti saved both me and my grade from failing DP as covid was not the easiest to deal with and we were all severely behind but she encouraged us to keep going and organized tutorials and free boarding so we would have help from our teachers at all times and it allowed us all to pass raising the school average IB grade, something we are very proud of.
“
I hope to continue to see changes in the school for the better but also to remind students that IB especially DP is a marathon and if you try to spring through it not only will you burn out but miss out on so much fun. It’s important to have fun outside of school as well as good grades for it creates your personality and identity.

You have been studying in UISZ from Y1-Y12, can you share which part of school life you enjoy most ?
As a student that has been apart of Utahloy since Year 1, I have to say, Utahloy has been very supportive with my studies and wellbeing. Utahloy provides and hosts many events that matches perfectly into my interest.
My favorite school events includes: GIN Bali, a school trip where 6 students went to Indonesia together. WWW, going on campus with my classmates created the most memorable memories ever. MUN, Model United Nations U2NESCO changed my life, it helped me meet a lot of people, taught me a lot of essential skills that includes persuading skills and public speaking skills, as well as taught me how to engage into public issues and see possible ways to contribute.
What you have learned through IB?
IB was a difficult programme, it’s been a tough but enjoyable journey. IB taught me how to manage time, because often you have multiple assignments or reports that are due in a certain period of time, and you must be able to manage your time so you can complete all your work on time.
HOng kong
IB also taught me the importance of self study and researching skills and to follow your interest, I didn’t feel stressed while writing my IA’s and EE’s because I chose topics that I had a great interest in, hence I was incredibly passionate while researching into my IA/EE topics.
Can you share with us you got multiple offers from different discipline? You had received several offers, why you choose University of Hong Kong finally? is the university you want to go most?
I received offer from HKU, HKUST, CUHK, PolyU and CityU. The reason I chose HKU was because it was the only University I thought I had the lowest chance to get into. Because HKU is very competitive and the acceptance rate is relatively low, I felt like it would be interesting if I went to study in a competitive University. HKU also offered the major I was more interested in, hence leading me to choose HKU.
Any impressive parts you want to share? MUN? Service?
My most impressive parts I’d like to share in school was my leadership roles: I was the year representative for 2 years in a row, house captain in year 10, school captain in year 11 and Secretary General of U2NESCO in year 12. I felt like undertaking leadership roles in school helped me grow a lot as a individuals. I learnt how to work with everyone, how to communicate effectively and how to deal with unexpected situations.
Other than leadership roles, MUN also took a big part of my school life in Utahloy. I started MUN in year 6 as a delegate, an admin in year 7, working my way up in year 8 I got my first award as a delegate and in year 9 I was the co chair for the human rights committee. In year 10 I was the president chair for the special focus committee, year 11 I was the head of chair, president chair for U2NESCO and G20. Then finally in year 12 I became the Secretary General of U2NESCO 2021.
Could you share your suggestions to the younger students?
1
Choose topics you are interested in, so you’d be motivated to write and conduct research
2
Manage you time, don’t pile all your work together and do it last minute, try to finish one at a time so you don’t mess up everything
3
Get help from your supervisor, teachers or even other graduates, if you feel lazy or stuck, ask for help
4
Participate in a bunch of school events, undertake lots of leadership roles and do MUN, it is seriously incredibly helpful for University application
5
Learn to enjoy the process, don’t spend all your time studying, I only spent 30% of my time studying but I still did good, so don’t pressure yourself too much and enjoy your high school life
Hailey Kim
Class of 2021
Korea University
Hi Uthaloy! My name is Hailey Kim and I’m a graduate from the class of 2021.
I have been in Utahloy since year 9 to 12. So I have experienced both MYP and DP.
As a korean study in China , do you face any difficulty ?
Personally, I haven’t faced any difficulties studying in China as a Korean. Since I was born and raised in China, China was like a second hometown for me. Also, it was a lot easier for me to learn Chinese in that environment.
You have studied Korean as a mother tongue language at UISZ. How would you recommend this programme to others?
Personally, I haven’t faced any difficulties studying in China as a Korean. Since I was born and raised in China, China was like a second hometown for me. Also, it was a lot easier for me to learn Chinese in that environment.
How do you find the CCA at UISZe.g. MUN, CAS?
From year 9 to 10, I simply chose the CCAs that were available for me and that were made by other teachers. For instance, I was part of the crafting CCA during MYP. But since DP which is from year 11 to 12, I was able to create my own CCA of my interest. This is when I began Econ teaching CCA. It definitely helped me decide what I want to do in the future, and it also was a bit to write about in uni essays.
Can you share your study tips to UISZ student?
I don’t think there’s much to share about my study tips. Every person’s different so their studying style would also be different. But I do want to say that never hesitate to ask questions to teachers. You are able to gain information that would not have been discussed in classes from your questions.
