The Secondary Curriculum Project "Language and Literature" aims to encourage students to use language as a means of thinking, creating and self-expression, and to enhance their skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, visualising and presenting in different contexts. In order to provide more stages for students to demonstrate and to hone their self-expression skills, on 20 October 2023, ASJ organised the 1st Chinese Speech Competition and Language and Literature Exploration Exhibition.
The theme of this speech contest is "talking about beauty". There is never a lack of beauty around us, but sometimes there is a lack of eyes to discover it. The participating students were required to speak on the theme of the beauty of life in various colours. On the day of the event, eight students from the three junior high school grades stood on the final stage to show us their observations and thoughts on life, and took us to explore and appreciate the beauty in their eyes. These included the beauty of nature, the beauty of the city, the beauty of life, the beauty of science, the beauty of history and the beauty of the human heart.
The judges graded the performances of the contestants on the spot from the aspects of content theme, language delivery and overall performance, and selected the first, second and third prizes of the contest. Ms Elaine Lee, Vice Principal of Academic, commented on the competition and encouraged students to break through themselves, practice diligently, and blossom and enjoy themselves on the stage.

In addition, after nearly half a semester of study, students have gained some new understanding of the IB curriculum system. At the Subject Exploration Exhibition, several students were interviewed to express their understanding of IB assessment. Students said that compared with the traditional examination, IB curriculum assessment has various forms and clear standards, which can evaluate students' abilities in an all-round way, and also put forward higher requirements for students' comprehensive abilities.
After the speech contest, students in each class also conducted an inquiry exhibition on the language subject. In preparation for the inquiry exhibition, students were required to summarise and reflect on their learning, integrating knowledge, concepts and skills to review and summarise their learning in the language subject and present it to the whole community.
The Chinese Speech Contest Competition and Language and Literature Exploration Exhibition demonstrated the students' language ability, learning ability, communication ability and cultural cultivation, and more fully demonstrated the ASJ students' understanding of life and passion for the world.ASJ will continue to enrich the activities inside and outside of the school, giving students a bigger stage, so that the students can grow up in the activities, and to become a talent in practice.
