People recognize and pass on their culture through celebration.
This unit, How We Express Ourselves, the Grade 1 students embarked on an enlightening journey into the world of global festivities, exploring the colorful traditions of Brazil's Carnival, South Africa's Heritage Day, and India's Holi. These cultural deep dives are an integral part of our curriculum designed to broaden perspectives and foster an environment of respect and inclusivity.
The festivities kicked off with Brazil's Carnival, a vibrant celebration known for its extravagant parades and rhythmic music. The students made their own feathered headdresses and danced to samba music. explored South Africa's Heritage Day, which honors the rich diversity and cultures of South Africa. They engaged in making traditional beadwork and examined South African culinary traditions, appreciating how heritage is expressed through art and cuisine. The exploration concluded with Holi, the Indian Festival of Colors, celebrating the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. The students enjoyed a playful session of throwing non-toxic, washable colors, while discussing the historical and cultural significance of the festival.
Throughout these explorations, students reflected on how these celebrations compare to their own cultural practices. Through discussions and activities, they not only learned about the reasons people celebrate but also discovered the universal values of joy, bravery, and community in these diverse cultures.
As Affiliated School of Hong Kong and Macao students, continues to nurture young global citizens, these experiences are invaluable in building a foundation of understanding and mutual respect from a young age.

Central Idea
Signs and symbols facilitate local and global communication.
G2 students explore how society utilizes different signs and symbols to communicate effectively. The students tuned into signs and symbols in their daily lives, found out the meaning of signs and symbols, sorted out difference types of signs and symbols, such as, road sings , warning symbols, math symbols,emoji, and so on.
Students took action as they created signs and symbols to help the ASJ community be more aware and safe. On the day of UOI exhibition, students showcased the signs created in order to instruct visitors. Grade 2 did an outstanding job of presenting their work with the ability to clearly explain the inquiry process to the learner community.
Central Idea
Clothing expresses the uniqueness of people.
Under the central idea "Clothing expresses the uniqueness of people",the students wanted to do a fashion show with catwalk, music and poses from the start.
For this fashion show, the students in Grade Three made or chose clothes that represented their uniqueness. With the help of UOI teachers, they explored the various types of clothing and why people choose them; Under the guidance of art teachers, they learn to design clothing patterns; Under the guidance of the music teacher, they learn to appreciate and choose songs to match the T-stage show; Under the guidance of their dance teacher, they practice the catwalk every day.
This showcase let students discover that clothing isn't just practical or beautiful, but also that it has ideas behind it. These ideas can be shown to truly express the individual. From that, students gathered a strong appreciation and open-minded understanding of how choices really make us who we are.
Central Idea
Advertising shapes our choices.
In this unit, our G4 students try to understand what advertising is. After they know about the types of advertising,the persuasive influence of advertising techniques and the effects of advertising,they attempted to create their own Ad showcasing the characteristics of the G4 class !
Under the guidance of their English teacher, they finalised their slogan: “G4A where Funny+Naughty+Smart=Success” They got their cool design ideas from their math and homeroom teacher, learned the science of using colours for persuasive effect under collaborative effort of their art and UOI teacher and the final product directed by the Chinese teacher!
On the showcase, they also introduced ethical advertising and consumerism to the guests.
Central Idea
Modern communication provides people with ways in which to express our ideas, creativity and feelings.
Grade 5 was exploring how we use modern ways to communicate and express ourselves with the main focus on communication platforms. Students explored Instant Messaging Apps, Social Media, Business Apps, Email and Conference Apps. Students decided to focus on social media and explore the different social media platforms around the world and in China. They also touched on the importance of rights and responsibilities we have when using social media platforms.
On the day of UOI exhibition, they showcased their inquiry process and presented their findings to one another. Students can now identify different communication platforms, understand how to correctly use them as well as the rights and responsibilities that come with using these platforms.
