IELTS 8.5? That’s not the point

Then came Grade 8. The year he truly became part of EABA. The year everything changed.
The IP Project
William led the "Methane from Kitchen Waste" experiment—a project he poured his heart into. Seven failures. Each time, he and his team refined their approach. Each time, they got back up.
They refined their approach, ran the process, restructured their logic. They didn't give up when results were poor. They didn't stop when data was accidentally destroyed. With teachers' encouragement and relentless trying, the project finally succeeded.
William says the IP project was a test of both knowledge and willpower. At EABA, project-based learning isn't just about outcomes—it's about the journey of growth.

The Robotics Competition
At the WRC Robotics Competition, William wasn't the team leader—but everyone trusted him. The whole team depended on him.
He solved the hardest technical problems. He made the toughest calls. Together with the official leader, he guided the team forward—becoming the "invisible leader" everyone recognized.
"I don't need to be the one standing in front," he says. "I just need to be trusted and needed—and then I'll get the job done."
He co-designed the dual-control catapult and the automatic sorting robot. When a motor failed mid-competition, he stayed calm, diagnosed the issue, restructured the mechanism, and got the robot back on track. The team won third prize at the 2025 World Robot Competition. He had truly become what he wanted to be—someone who is needed.
what truly mattered were the teachers who supported us behind the scenes—staying with us late into the night, cheering us on through every failure, and applauding every small victory.

The School Sports Day
Already carrying an injury, William signed up for multiple events. During the 1000m final, he gave everything. A runner from another class cut him off strategically. He tripped. He flew through the air.
Teacher Lyu rushed over, held him, and said, "Stop. Rest." William struggled to his feet and kept running. He passed two runners. He didn't win a medal. But when he crossed the finish line, his entire class stood up and cheered.
"He flew through the air, and we thought he was done," a classmate recalls. "But when he stood up, we knew he'd already won."
When William took second place in the 1500m, he said: "It doesn't matter that I fell. What matters is that I finished."
In William's heart, true youth is youth with growth. And his growth came with EABA by his side—because EABA is a place with a teacher's embrace, with classmates' trust, and with applause that cheers you on.

IELTS 8.5 is his answer to years of consistent learning—and proof of Huawai's support. What's remarkable isn't the score itself. It's how he got there: not by cramming, but through steady, long-term accumulation.
Reading as Foundation: From childhood, William devoured bilingual originals. He loved dozens of series like Roald Dahl, Harry Potter, Horrible Science, and Discworld. He also treasured the English books gifted by his EABA English teacher Mr. T and Principal Liu.

Expression as Growth: He moved from reading to speaking—debate, Model UN, speech contests. First prize at WSDA Guangzhou. First prize at WSDA Greater Bay Area debate.

Confidence in Testing: Initial test: 7.0. Systematic preparation later: 8.5. Water under the bridge. "He never learned English for the test," his teacher says. "He genuinely loves it."

William's parents are both university professors. He has received offers from both Huafu and Tsinglan School. He'll soon start his high school journey at Tsinglan.

He is a boy with light—destined for a bigger stage. And Huawai was an important stop along the way.

If Huawai was a system upgrade, and IELTS 8.5 was your benchmark score—what's the invisible app you installed?
He says. "Knowing that I don't have to be alone."

What's the greatest gift Huawai gave you?
Someone held me when I fell apart. Someone cheered when I fell down. They taught me that it's okay not to be perfect.

What will you carry with you to your new school?
Don't be afraid to speak. Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to ask for help. And—study when it's time to study, talk when it's time to talk. Both are good.

Imagine your at a new school. You feel lost again. What would you say to yourself?
He looks out the window. Then turns back. "Don't worry. You've already learned how to make friends."

We tell this story not because of IELTS 8.5—that score will be surpassed. We tell it because William's youth at Huawai was one where someone lifted him up, he surpassed himself, and he grew.
He learned: to accept failure—but never stop trying. To stand not at center stage—but to become someone the team needs. To face the unexpected—and pursue his goals anyway.
Huawai is where he learned all of this.
