Elaine, a prospective graduate of FCG’s Class of 2026, has received 11 university offers across the UK, the US, and Australia.
UK G5 and leading universities:
Two offers from University College London, as well as offers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Manchester.
US UC system and top public universities:
University of California, San Diego; University of California, Davis; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Santa Barbara; Rutgers University; and Pennsylvania State University.
Australia’s Group of Eight:
The University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney.
How did she cultivate academic curiosity at FCG, engage in research practice, and plan strategically to secure admission to top universities worldwide?

Elaine applied almost exclusively for Majors in Biological Sciences. Her interest in biology can be traced back to a childhood memory—a bowl of bitter traditional Chinese Medicine.
As a child, she once took a dark herbal decoction for a cold. The bitterness made her frown, but what puzzled her more was a question that stayed with her for years: how could a few pieces of liquorice root and herbs, boiled together, cure illness?
It was only after she began systematically studying biology and chemistry at FCG that she gradually found the answer. Traditional Chinese medicine contains microscopic chemical compounds that produce physiological effects once they enter the human body. This is precisely the appeal of interdisciplinary study between biology and chemistry.

However, being “interested” and knowing “this is what I want to pursue” are not the same. For a time, Elaine felt uncertain about her future direction.
“I was interested in many subjects,” she recalled. “In Grade 10, I wanted to choose physics, but my university counsellor suggested that since I was strongly interested in biology and chemistry, I should take both. So I gave up physics.”
In Grade 11, Elaine chose six subjects: Economics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Chinese, building on a general interest rooted in childhood.

During the summer of Grade 11, under her teacher’s guidance, she conducted research on plant endophytes at Guangzhou Pharmaceutical University, supervised by a professor. This experience helped her further clarify her academic direction.
“Endophytes are micro-organisms that live symbiotically within plants, including bacteria and fungi. I worked on the fungal side. We placed plant tissue samples on culture media, and the fungi grew out. We then tested their biological activity. Many plants have long growth cycles, but endophytes grow much faster, and some can produce the same active compounds as their host plants. Extracting useful substances from endophytes can be far more efficient than cultivating the plants themselves. This is a relatively new research area in the past five years.”

During this period, Elaine spent her days preparing culture media, isolating fungi, and testing activity—repetitive, meticulous, and focused work.
“I found it easy to enter a state of flow.” she said. “I didn’t think about anything else— I just focused on doing the task well.”

Driven by curiosity, Elaine became increasingly fascinated with biology. She often asked her university counsellor: “What other ways are there to explore this subject in depth?”
Rather than providing a ready-made reading list, her counsellor encouraged her to search independently: “Go to the Cambridge website and find out yourself.”
What Elaine learned was not just what to read, but how to search, compare, and evaluate information. Gradually, she developed a clear interest in molecular biology—drawn to its ability to explain macroscopic phenomena through microscopic mechanisms, and to its emphasis on experimental verification.

In her AS examinations, Elaine achieved straight A grades across all six subjects. She also earned an A* in her EPQ and achieved an IELTS overall score of 7.5. Behind these results was targeted guidance from her teachers.
Her biology teacher, Jennifer, advised her that many long-answer questions in Year 12 follow fixed patterns from the textbook and can be memorised, while shorter questions are more flexible and require deeper thinking.

Her chemistry teacher, Demi, emphasised reviewing answers independently after completing practice questions, followed by classroom discussion to reinforce understanding.
Her mathematics teacher, Angela, had deep familiarity with past papers. She helped students identify the most valuable questions and analyse mark schemes in detail, ensuring they understood common pitfalls.

Elaine describes herself as a perfectionist who often hesitates to begin tasks, fearing she is not ready. Rather than simply offering encouragement, her teachers pushed her to take action—learning programming and participating in competitions.
As a result, she ranked in the top 25% in the Waterloo Mathematics Competition, and won a Gold Award in the Canadian Chemistry Contest (GCCO) and a Silver Award in the UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO).

When it came to choosing her Major, writing personal statements, and submitting applications, she no longer waited until she felt “fully prepared.” Instead, she started early and refined her work as she went. Her university counsellor provided feedback on her essays, set deadlines, and regularly monitored her progress, helping her move from procrastination to proactive planning.
She later reflected on a phrase she particularly values:
“Success is taking action in the present moment.”

Elaine
Elaine summarised her study approach:
* Review regularly instead of leaving everything until the end.
* When practising questions, understand the examiner’s logic and learn to answer in line with mark schemes, including key terminology.
* Keep an error log, analyse the causes of mistakes, and address specific weaknesses rather than attributing errors to carelessness.
* Take consistent notes—writing reinforces memory. Reading notes aloud can also help with both pronunciation and spelling.

She often studied with a small group of classmates, explaining problems to one another.
“If you can explain it clearly, it means you truly understand it. During the explanation process, you may discover gaps in your logic, which you can then address. It’s very effective.”

Elaine’s school life extended beyond academics. In Grade 10, she enjoyed boxing classes, which helped her relax.
She also took horse riding lessons, joined biology and chemistry clubs, dissected fish, and studied plant structures. These diverse experiences provided a balanced rhythm to her learning.

One of her most memorable experiences was a chemistry project in which she and her classmates designed an experiment to create colour changes representing the four seasons.
Rather than discouraging them because it was not part of the exam syllabus, their teacher supported them, helping source materials and guiding them to research and design the reactions themselves. In the end, they successfully completed the experiment.
“It wasn’t for exams—we just thought it would be fun. Using what we learned to create something we wanted was an amazing feeling.”

At FCG, Elaine was allowed to learn “for the joy of it,” a culture that helped sustain her passion for learning.
Elaine’s top choice is the University of California, San Diego, ranked 29th in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. The university offers students the flexibility to explore different interests during their first two years, allowing them to continue discovering their true academic direction.
What FCG provides is not only strong academic results, but also the ability for students to define their own futures.
