From the School Stage to the Global Top 50 of the “Chinese Bridge” Competition:
The Chinese Language Journey of International Students at ISA Science City
At the recently concluded 2026 “Chinese Bridge” Global Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners, Lucy Lu, an Italian student at ISA Science City, advanced through the Storytelling Competition and reached the global Top 50.
This achievement belongs to Lucy, but it also offers a glimpse into what learning Chinese can mean for international students studying and living in China. At ISA Science City, Chinese language learning goes beyond building language proficiency, extending to communication, self-expression and opportunities to engage with a wider world.
From Language Learning
to a Bigger Stage
The preliminary round of the 2026 “Chinese Bridge” Global Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners was held both online and in person from March to June. More than 1,400 contestants from 103 countries took part.
Following the selection process, 50 groups from 35 countries advanced to the next round.
At the South China regional round held at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies on 19 April, more than 180 contestants from 52 countries gathered in Guangzhou; after a day of intense competition, five contestants won direct passes to represent the South China region in the next round, and Lucy was proud to be one of the five.
Chinese learning is moving beyond the mastery of language knowledge towards understanding and expression in real situations. Every time students step onto a stage, they take another step towards connecting with a wider world.
A Clear Path for
Chinese Language Development
at ISA Science City
For international students, learning a new language requires continuous practice, as well as clear goals and opportunities to use the language in real-world situations.
At ISA Science City, the school holds Chinese cultural exhibitions and cross-cultural exchange events every year, giving students authentic settings in which to build confidence using Chinese. At the same time, the school actively connects students with a range of Chinese-language competitions, providing opportunities to move from learning within the school to larger platforms.
Competitions can become an important part of learning, teaching skills beyond the language itself. Students prepare, communicate and present their ideas, while building confidence through repeated experience in new and unfamiliar settings.
ISA Science City teachers also provide guidance and support throughout the competition process, from preparation before the event, to support during the competition, and reflection afterwards. In this way, each competition becomes part of students’ language learning journey and personal growth.
When Chinese Becomes
Another Way for
International Students to
Connect with China
As more students from around the world join ISA Science City and receive an international education in China, Chinese as a second language takes on a broader meaning.
For these international students, Chinese is more than a language they need to learn. They are studying and living in China, while also experiencing a social and cultural environment where Chinese is part of everyday life. Being able to communicate in Chinese, understand Chinese culture and express their ideas in real-life situations gives them another way to connect with the people around them, with the city they live in and with the country they are getting to know.
For international students who grow up in China, this meaning runs even deeper: rooted in traditional culture, Chinese becomes a foundation they carry with them and never lose.
The value of learning Chinese, therefore, goes beyond a test or a competition. ISA Science City aims to provide international students with a Chinese learning journey in which they can explore, progress and take on new challenges step by step.
Along this journey, some students may pursue competitions, while others may focus more on everyday communication. Many typically find that learning Chinese language helps them gain a deeper understanding of China.
This is also one of the values of language learning in international education:
When students have access to more languages, they also have more ways to understand the world, express themselves and build connections across cultures.
ISA Science City will continue to provide students with diverse opportunities for language practice and international exchange, giving every interest room to grow and making it possible for the language-learning experience to open doors to the world.
