· 低年级学生的阅读理解问题。一、二年级学生要听题和阅读理解大量题目,这将挑战孩子们的理解能力;
· 未覆盖的知识点。由于两个年级一起参与同一等级的考试,低年级的学生没学高年级的知识点;
· 逻辑推理问题。低年级学生的逻辑推理思想还处于萌芽阶段;
· 教会学生理解关键词,并运用关键词找寻解题思路;
· 用可视化教学工具,帮助学生理解高年级的知识点;
· 运用数学归纳法、图表法和建模法,帮助学生理解逻辑推理;
· 全面进行备赛,备赛资料和课程内容高度融合;

Welcome To
The Fettes Primary Newsletter
The Principal of
Primary School
Julia Xu
Dear Parents, Students and Friends,
It's a pleasure to write the preamble for the Primary School's newsletter! From now on, the primary school will launch the newsletter every two weeks. We would like to share with you our children's learning, the joy of growing up, the activities in the Primary School, as well as the progress and achievements we’ve made in the newsletter. Each issue of the newsletter will revolve around a theme, and the theme of this issue is wins and achievements. Wins and achievements are not out of reach, it is in the process of children's learning and growth every day. When a shy child confidently raises his/her hand to answer a question, then he/ she wins! When a child tries a new sport, it can also be regarded as a win!
In March, G4 students successfully held the "Young Entrepreneur Day" activity through the study of the "Trade" Inquiry Unit,! and they raised 520 yuan (the number 520 in mandarin sounds like the mandarin of "I love you") and donated it to the Orphan Education Society Guangdong to help the sick child Mingzai.

It's amazing that students can take positive action through meaningful inquiry! We are proud of their achievements! From April 11 to April 22, during the two weeks of online learning, most students showed good adaptability. Most of them could use information technology and Approaches to Learning advocated by IB, and they are so self-disciplinary that they can concentrate on online learning. Thank you to all parents for your great support to teachers and children during the online teaching period!
This newsletter is not only a publication for teachers, who may provide teaching stories and describe the growth of students, it also looks forward to receiving contributions from students and parents. If you have any stories like children's learning, experiences of children’s growth or home education, please feel free to submit articles to our Director of Moral Education Ms. Jane Lai (jane.laifettes.cn).
I wish the newsletter will become better and better!

I Am Reaching My Goal
I will work hard…"When I know the standard of the learning task, I will work hard towards it." This is from one of our students saying they use the success criteria to complete their formative tasks. In our English class, whenever students need to complete a task, there will be a success criteria.
Sometimes, the criteria are provided by the teachers and sometimes formulated together with the students. We found that the use of success criteria had a positive impact on both teachers’ teaching and students’ learning:
· It gives students a sense of ownership of their learning and assessment if you co-create and use it to assess their work.
· It clearly outlines the difference between an A and a B or Level 1 and 2.
· It helps students understand an assignment and think through the expectations before they start to create something.
· It also reduces many obstacles due to unclear goals.
(In the above pictures Ethan B, Hanks, Mark, Lisas, Kevin and Leon show their reading and public speaking skills. One of the great achievements of this semester has been our student's courage to give it a go.)

In recent weeks, online learning has been a new and sometimes challenging experience for all. It does however bring with it a plentiful opportunity for innovation and creativity. An unavoidable part of online learning, however, is the increased use of technology and potentially a more physically restricted learning experience. Therefore, during these times, our role in the PE department becomes even more vital.
During times of reduced social activity, sport, and general day to day movement, it is essential that the students are provided with opportunities to complete the physical activity during their days at home, to support not only their physical well-being but their mental well-being too.
In Grade 1, the students have shown a great commitment to their physical education and displayed a plethora of interesting and engaging learning evidence.
Each day the children had a new daily workout to follow, each workout focusing on different components of fitness. They also had a new daily skill challenge which allowed them to show resilience and focus to compete with themselves to improve their own skill level, again focusing on different aspects of fitness. In addition to this, the children also endeavoured to complete their own choice of physical activity and participated in a range of activities including outdoor hiking, trampolining, badminton and skipping.
They also attended live PE lessons, discussed some of the theories behind Physical education and completed some online physical activities. We are very proud of the Grade 1 students for showing such dedication to their physical and mental well-being during online learning and we look forward to welcoming them back onto campus.
03、Growing Early Writers
Our Success at FCG
Primary School
Expat Teacher &
PYP Assistant Coordinator

Writing in English is an activity that does not come naturally to most students in Grade 1 at FCG. Our students come from all over China and gradually become familiar with the English language through listening and speaking activities before they embark on their journey to become writers. Hence, we provide modelling writing for our students and enrich their writing experiences by using the guided writing process. We use picture prompts and key sentence structures to scaffold the students’ written work.
Recently, the students in Grade 1 completed a writing activity where they were given choice to design clothes for members of the royal family. Each student may choose the colour and item of clothing that his or her character wears. They were each provided with a planning sheet to list the clothing and colour of each item. Using this planning sheet, the students were able to
construct the writing by using the words in the list. Here are samples of our student's work that we would like to share with you.
If you ever want to try a guided writing activity with your child at home, please use some of these sentence starters or picture prompts. Here are some ideas you might like to try:
1) Make a shopping list
2) Use ‘I can …’ statements
3) ‘I wish I can…’
4) Talk about what each foot and hands can do
a. Feet can … jump, hop, skip
b. Hands can … clap, tap, wriggle
Finally, create a writing toolbox fill it up with all sorts of coloured pens, and stickers and spur your child on to try using labels to begin their writing journey. Enjoy!
(Wonderful examples of our Grade 1 writing success.)
04、Science is Fun
Scientific Experiments

If students can learn through experience, they can learn more knowledge and have fun." In science teaching, students learn beyond the classroom and books. They are free to explore the relevant fields and observe and experience them from their own perspective.
The Grade 3 science subject focuses on understanding the motion of objects, distinguishing the characteristics of plants and animals and their growth processes, and understanding the sun, earth, and moon and their spatial relationships.
(Grade 3 student enjoying and participating in a science experiment. )
In the learning process, each child will be provided with materials, through experiments or simulation experiments. Our children can experience the scientific principles behind it. In the science class, some additional expansive projects will be done to exercise the children's hands-on ability, and it is also a re-examination and examination of knowledge. Through the creation and use of multi-angle activities, our students master the ability of scientific thinking, and inquiry practice, and establish critical analytical skills.
05、Creative Expression
Grade 4 Artistic Journey
Primary School Art Teacher
Emily Huang
G4 children are very active in creativity and expression. In this lesson, we learned about wire construction. Our children used different lengths of thin sticks to design and try to build architectural works of art in the form of different arrangements, crosses, and reorganizations. These small works of art contain our children's infinite creation and expression, and also integrate our children's focus. The integration of a student’s focus is critical in developing their ongoing interests in the subject. Our students are very imaginative, active and intelligent.

This term our G5 music program focuses on music appreciation, momentum, rhythm creation, and vocal skills. In my lessons, normally, each child will be given a separate listening exercise and a pitch melody model singing exercise to practice. Students’ absolute tonal ability will be improved through sight-singing and ear training. In terms of vocal singing, students will be given simple vocal exercises. They will develop better singing abilities through scientific vocal teaching methods. In addition, I will introduce some musicians’ life stories and their classic works to improve children's musical literacy and their appreciation of music.
In conjunction, I will combine Orff's teaching method with my teaching. Classical music is usually used as the background rhythm, and then students use various parts of their bodies to produce different rhythmic sounds. Music is not only the art of hearing, in our lessons, we also use the sight effect. For example, asking students to listen to music and then draw a melody line. In this exercise, students can intuitively see the direction of the melody. What’s more, I consistently develop our children's creative ability by asking students to use the rhythm type they have learned and combine different background music to create simple music melodies.

Why participate?
Math Kangaroo was proposed and developed by the famous Australian mathematician Peter O'Halloran in 1980. It is currently the world's largest international mathematics competition for young people. It is held in 87 countries and regions and more than 6.3 million students participate every year. The Kangaroo Math Contest questions are lively and interesting. The purpose of Math Kangaroo is to assess students' logical reasoning skills, sense of direction and shapes and modelling ability, rather than simply arithmetic skills. It is suitable for IB school students who carry out inquiry-based learning. Our school has many math enthusiasts and students with outstanding thinking abilities. Therefore, our school decided to organize students to participate in the mathematics competition held in April this year.
Scroll up and down to read detail
How do our students prepare?
The word problems are related to five categories: calculations, the transformation of shapes, Sudoku, logical reasoning, and modelling. The mathematics team decided to implement sessions of training. We spent a large amount of time in practice class, enrichment class, as well as Math Club, focused on coaching participants. Due to the first competition for our young learners, we focused on three divs: basic calculation, the transformation of 2D shapes and logical reasoning.
Challenges for our students:
During the preparation process, the subject group encountered many technical difficulties.
- Reading comprehension problems for lower grade students. Grade 1 and 2 students were challenged with listening to and reading massive questions within 75 minutes.
- Uncovered knowledge points. Since two grade-level students participate in a sit-down exam, the lower grade-level students have not learned the knowledge points of the upper grade. However, these are challenges that are easily overcome.
Logical reasoning questions:
- Lower primary students are rarely exposed to logical thinking problems.
- In early April, the number of epidemic cases in Guangzhou increased, and schools were closed. As a result, of this sudden, the format changed to an online test format. This resulted in our students could only prepare for the competition online, which made us slow down the pace.
“Math Kangaroo is a wonderful opportunity for our students”.
- Mr. Thomas-
In addition, the competition is held online, which is also a challenge to the parents who set up devices at home for the kids.
What can we do and how can our students' families help?
- Teach students to understand keywords and apply keywords to explain solutions.
- Visualize abstract concepts to help students understand higher-level learning points.
- Apply induction, diagram and modelling methods to solve problems.
- Fully engaged students in the preparation. Highly integrated with regular lessons.
- Simplify and summarize equipment installation instructions. Be open and act on parents' queries.
Thank you for all of your hard work. After two months of preparation, the competition ended successfully. A total of 20 primary school students participated 100% submitted their answers. We are proud of you of all of our participants! We are grateful to our wonderfully qualified maths teachers, homeroom teachers and all our students’ families, for your full support and trust! We look forward to the announcement of the results in May.
