It was exciting to celebrate the graduation
ceremony with the Class of 2020 on June 6.
In consideration of safety and health requirements, we held the graduation ceremony in the Dragon Lake Princess Hotel near the school, and strictly controlled the number of attendees. At the same time, the livestream of the graduation ceremony allowed students, teachers, relatives and friends who were not able to join to watch it on line.
Students from the class of 2020 have achieved satisfactory results: some of them have received offers from top comprehensive universities such as New York University, University College London, the University of Sydney, etc., while others will go to Berklee College of Music, John Jay College Criminal Justice and other colleges to focus on a certain field.
Congratulations to the Class of 2020. In their gowns and caps, our graduates are taking their paths to a bright future.
Chinese Principal
Ms. Shannon's Speech
Dear ladies and gentlemen, students and teachers. Good morning everyone. First of all, thank you all for coming to the graduation ceremony today.
Congratulations on your perseverance in completing your studies and achieving outstanding results despite the dire circumstances of the COVID-19 ravaging the world. This shows that in the face of a changing and unpredictable future, you have developed the adaptability, time management and self-management skills that will ensure that you will be able to live, study and work smoothly in universities abroad. Compared with your academic achievements, these mature performances are more commendable. You are destined to be role models for all students of Yew Wah. You have shown the strong will and perseverance of Yew Wah students to the world. I am deeply proud of you all!
As with previous graduates, I would like to make a few wishes that you will keep in mind.
First, take care of yourself and live a safe and healthy life.
Second, if you are good at what you do, you will learn. I hope you will continue to have a passion for learning and to explore and study in depth in your profession.
Third, cultivate your moral character, regulate the family, country and world.
Finally, I would like to congratulate you again on graduating with honors and wish you all the best in your future university life. Thank you!
Western Principal
Mr. Aaron's Speech
You are leaving us today – having made the journey into mature young people. You have outgrown this school and are now stepping out into the world beyond. Just as you were when you first arrived at the school, perhaps you are proud, perhaps you are nervous, perhaps it it’s the world beyond that seems impossibly big.
You have so much to offer the world. Go forth and take your place. This world needs you. It needs your kindness, your caring natures, your consideration and thoughtfulness of others. Your grace and humility are outstanding. Use that along with your other laudable skills to make humanity that much better.
And you might find that although you have left Yew Wah Guangzhou, I do hope that you do carry something of this school away with you. Take the values of this place with you – we look after each other at this school, and we look after other people too. Take the learning and the wisdom you acquired here – and apply them to become the best person you can be. Above all, take the friendships you have built up here.
Chinese Teachers' representative Ms. Annabel's Speech
Next is what I want to say to the graduates and all YWIES-GZ students. When you are still a student of a school and about to be a person entering society, what kind of choice is the best choice? The answer is to be a wonderful person. To be wonderful enough to satisfy yourself, to influence the people around you, to change a society, to be too excited to fall asleep at night, to shout your crazy thoughts to the sky, to embrace a rainy day, to meditate quietly on the noble loneliness in your soul, to walk to the streets, the crowds, everything on a sunny day, saying I love you to everything, everyone, the sun, you, and myself.
Western Teachers' representative Ms. Jemma's Speech
I’ve been fortunate to be their form teacher for 5 years now and my goodness…. it has certainly been a roller coaster ride getting to know them.
One of the nicest early memories for me was your performance of the show about the life of Stephan Hawking we took to a local school, I was expecting about 30 students in the audience and then 500 came in to watch…..I was terrified, but you were all so cool. I knew then that there was something special about you all.You were all stars!
I’m going to miss you both so much, so it will never be goodbye… just tra..
Today our journey together has come to an end but yours are now just beginning….. Jordon, Kevin, Cici, Lina and Lucia, I love you all. Good luck with the next stages of your lives.
There are falling stars with all of your names on…. reach to catch them and be who you want to be. X
Valedictorian Jordon's Speech
On September 18th, 2014, a cool kid envisioning his future school, stepped onto the bright yellow Yew Wah school bus, wearing his the brand new school uniform, came to the “isolated” campus and faced his reality. For a cool kid like me who didn’t like school, indeed, I just considered Yew Wah to be a short-distant ride of my life’s journey and that I may soon quit and leave. I never thought that I would stay on this ride for 6 years, from the first station to the destination of the journey. And that was actually the thought shared by our classmates. In fact, Cici was once my schoolmate before in a previous school, and she would agree how much Yew Wah changed her attitude and encouraged her to pursue her passion in music. All of us came to Yew Wah with some confusion, issues with our past and questions for our future, but we found all our answers here. This is why our school is so special to us.
I came to Yew Wah in the founding year with my class size of 5. Coincidently, we now have a graduating class of 5. And thanks that we only have five graduates, so that I can introduce all of them to you one by one. We have musical talents like Cici who is significantly passionate about music, involves herself in performance inside and outside of the school, is very good at socializing, and is ambitious and chooses will follow her passion in music in university . We have Kevin who has a broad range of interests, is very sensitive about fashion, has a distinctive personality and chooses to study natural sciences. We also have Lucia who likes sports and plays really well, is trendy, and brings fun to classmates and has a strong interest in crime and psychology. We also have Angela, who is so responsible and kind-hearted and wishes to care for children’s early education. Our class may be small in size, but I think it has had the greatest influence at school. In every activity including student council, Seeds of Hope, sports day, basketball and volleyball tournaments, business simulation, musicals, rock band and etc., graduates of 2020 were actively involved and were winning prizes for the school. My fellow graduates enriched our classroom and made our campus so special and charismatic.
Though the years, there were always new students coming and friends leaving. In this room, it is a totally different group of students from my first day. Nonetheless, I will cherish and enjoy every moment that I have spent in Yew Wah. Memories…I remember our EOTC trip to Guilin and the World Classroom to the UK; we had performances with other campuses for Seeds of Hope; we took part in several drama productions; and we helped out with a lot of school events together. Among all of those moments, my happiest time was in Somerset, UK. I remember how excited we were visiting the London Eye and Oxford Street, the taste of the pizza we cooked in Haygrove School and the night we all dressed up and wandered by the river in Cambridge after the formal dinner. We ran on the beach in Bristol, the weather was cold and we were freezing, but we had such a fun time running around freely and happily. I remember all those nights in Knowle Hall, where we met up to eat instant noodles, where we took roles to take duty and where we were charged 1 pound and performed push ups when we spoke Chinese in front of Mr. Ponch, but the proceeds of the penalty paid for an awesome hot pot dinner in London. All of those experiences made the class of 2020 my second home. I think we will all remember those moments as the best times of our lives that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. A lot of friends of who left, wondered whether I would regret staying in Yew Wah for one third of my life and asked me why not to go to a better place? Hearing that, my answer was always firm and solid every time. I have never regretted staying, but only wished the time could last forever.
I still remember in the after-school activity of IA five years ago, Mr. Scott asked me what kind of person I was. I shyly and not fluently said, “I am a normal person”. However, through the years, after competing in speech competitions, taking part in summer school in Stanford University, being elected for student council and volunteering for cultural weeks or assemblies for many times, all these experiences has transformed me. So if Mr. Scott were to ask me the same question today, I would answer “ I am a special person, because of Yew Wah”. I am full of confidence and ready to face the future with determination because of the experiences gained from my education here.
Thinking back, it is all of my friends, all of my teachers and all things in Yew Wah that drove me to become better. I had my basketball teammates who got up before the sun rise and stepped into the gym with no one, to practice. I had my form class once combined with class of 2019 and now 2021, with a lot of lovely students who shared novel and creative ideas with lovely Ms. Jemma and Ms. Annabel. And I also had so many good teachers that worked day and night and tried their best to better our students and campus. Thank you all for accompanying the class of 2020 and leaving us an unforgettable school life.
And I have to say goodbye to every person that I encountered, every teacher and every student, it has been my fortune and pleasure to have met all of you, and I thank you for all the time we had. Now, our part in the story of Yew Wah comes to a pretty end, but the story of Yew Wah would just move on to a new chapter and to a new commencement for new talents to spring up and ink on the story. Nevertheless, to my fellow graduates, this is not where our story ends as well. Today marks the beginning of our new chapter. The future is bright and limitless, and I believe we are all prepared to tell our stories to more audiences and to the world. Leaving is always a sad thing, but let us look forward to our return. When we reunite in the future, our lives will be even more colorful and splendid. No matter what may happen, keep in mind that Yew Wah will always there as our home, to support us as alumni. I sincerely wish every graduate will fulfill their dreams and goals.
The day I came, Yew Wah just opened. The day I leave, coincidently, Yew Wah just opened as well under pandemic. The day I came, the weather was cloudless and pleasant, just like today. The day I came, my mood was nervous and I was yearning for a new journey, just like today. The day I came, no one knew of me or us, but on this day, we leave you with the memories of the Class of 2020. Yew Wah, I love you, we love you.
Graduate Kevin‘s Speech
I came to YewWah in early September 2015, and it has been nearly five years now. We were strangers, and in the past 5 years we became close friends. You guys have played an important part in my life. When I was preparing the speech, the memories of us was playing in my mind like a movie, and I couldn't help but lament how quickly time flies. We will get used to not seeing each other every day. We will go to different countries and cities, make new friends and have new lives, but I will never forget the time I spent with you all. Wherever we are, I hope we could work towards our own goals and be the best versions of ourselves. I don't want to say goodbye to you all, because this is not the end, this is just a new beginning.
To all teachers, thank you all for always having patience with me. Your influence and help to me was not only about academics. I used to be a person who cares about literally nothing, but under your influence, I’m slowly changing myself, making myself less lazy. I also want to thank you all for your continuous encouragement, which has made me more confident in myself.
Graduate Cici's Speech
First of all,I want to thank my parents for sending me to this school, and then I am really happy to meet everyone。And it's my teachers Ms. Annabel and Ms. Jemma. You two really like help me alive not only my study but also my personal life everything thank you. Thank you all and Lucia, Nicole, Charles and Angela,Kevin and Jordan.
You guys are being such a good friend with me and thank you guys so much。I love you, thank you!
Graduate Angela's speech
YWIES played an vital part in my high school experience. The four years that I spent in this school was memorable and meaningful . I met so many supportive teachers who always try their best to help me out when I was stuck with my studies. The friends I met here were all amazing. We have so many personalities in common. The place where me and my friends have been to will always full of laughs! YWIES as a school not only focus on academic studies, but also pays attention to develop students’ interest by holding many extra curricular such as baking, photography etc. In the future, I hope YWIES become better and better! I am proud to be a YWIESer!
Graduate Lucia's Speech
Thank you to all the people in this room, in China, in Spain and in America that have stood by my side since the beginning. Thank you to all the teachers that are watching this online that have taught me how to create my own opinions and to think for myself. Thank you to all my peers that welcomed me with huge arms and made me feel like I belonged. But my most important thank you goes to my mom.
Thank you for being the strongest person I know and for passing that strength on to me. Thank you for always believing in me and being by my side. Without you I would have never been able to accomplish all the things I have. I wouldn’t look at the world the way I do. I wouldn’t be the person I am today. You are the reason why I do everything I do. I love you.
At the end, here is expectations for graduates from Ms. Annabel:
So, what is wonderfulness? To experience, to suffer setbacks, to enjoy achievements, to cry, to be all adrift, to be anxious and depressed, to be ecstatic, to accept everything that appears on you, to appreciate everything because you are the only one, to love yourself at every moment, because you are so unique, and to
make the world wonderful.
