Behind the Scenes is a series of stories shared by TWIS faculty and staff who are living the school’s mission and making a difference in their roles every day. They are stories told from their own perspectives and shared with the TWIS community. Our Art Teachers, Ms. Wendy and Mr. Esteban, are passionate artists and educators who motivate TWIS students to appreciate art. What do students create while learning from home? Read how they take different approaches to empower students to hone their artistic abilities.

Teaching art online is a new experience. For a few years we have heard about many different courses online; now serendipitously we are logging on our computers at eight in the morning and beginning the day with pencils and papers ready to draw. Drawing in the morning helps our creative brain and makes the day more joyous and relaxed. I see the excitement in the students because what is more beautiful than painting expressive landscapes? We started this new year 2020 practicing simple ideas like drawing mountains, glaciers, flowing rivers, and fluffy clouds. These concepts are important to develop- a beautiful background or landscape which will be important later this year. We are building up our base of skills, confidence and exploring more difficult ideas like perspective, depth, and color harmony.

我较喜欢使用Photoshop进行线上授课,因为我可以一边画画,一边在屏幕共享图像,在屏幕上快速地展示各式各样我画的东西,能让学生更专注上课。这种互动式的线上课堂使学生亲眼目睹一张白纸变成一幅栩栩如生的风景画的过程。这也表示有时候我们只要花20分钟的注意力在一幅画上,就可以制作出一份精美的艺术品了。
I prefer to lead the class exercises with Photoshop because I am able to draw while I share my screen and show images, write on the screen and show many aspects very fast that keep the students engaged. These interactive virtual lessons are allowing students to see the transformation from a blank piece of paper to a landscape that has depth and expression. It’s also showing that sometimes all we need to do is focus on a drawing for 20 minutes and we can create a small artwork gift.

我平常喜欢用水彩和画笔用具画画,但是限制于在线教学,我们只能用一般的纸、彩色铅笔和一些马克笔。但是,这让同学们学会克服挑战,知道要掌握基本的技巧才能在有限的工具下创造出自己想画的东西。目前为止,大家已经会手绘各色各样的质感、图样和混色配搭了。
I would typically prefer to draw and paint with watercolors and real art materials but since we are restricted to online teaching we are also limited to regular paper, colored pencils and some markers. However, this is allowing our class to embrace the challenge of discovering the essential techniques needed for a student to create anything they want with available tools. So far, we can see a broad range of expressive textures, patterns and mixing color combinations.

By practicing and learning to control line, shape and color on a pleasant subject, we can start to realize that we have the potential to create a lot with just a few pencils. The fact is that art is better when it is simple and true. A child’s drawing can surprise many of us and touch our hearts. That is why we think it’s important to engage our students in their development of a discipline and art practice. I am looking forward to working with students as a team and creating beautiful works together on campus.

TWIS的小学生总是期待线上的视觉艺术课,因为这是他们可以创作和尽情享受画画乐趣的时刻。开始上课时,学生们常常大声喊着“Wendy老师,我们今天要画什么?”。他们在大清早8点总是精力充沛,干劲十足的!
PYP students of TWIS always look forward to the virtual visual art class because it is a time to create and have fun with art. Often the class starts with students asking out loud “Ms. Wendy! What are we going to draw today?”. Their energy at 8 am early in the morning is contagious!

美术课在TWIS在线课堂仍然是所有学生重要的一个学科,因为它让学生们以视觉形式表达自己和学会以完美的方式工作。我们应好好利用这个特殊时期,因为现在大家所创造的将会是我们人生中最值得纪念和最有意义的艺术品。
The art class remains an important subject to all students in TWIS Virtual School because it allows them to express themselves in visual forms and master the ideal way of doing things. We should take advantage of this special moment as what we are creating now will last as the most memorable and meaningful work for the rest of our lives.
让学生能够找到学科之间的联系性有助他们吸收知识。在部分PYP艺术课堂,我们把艺术融合到班主任老师的单元学习(UOI),制作配合UOI主题的艺术作品。根据他们学习的单元,学生在美术课创作出来的作品,将会是单元课上简报的一部分。
Students learn best if they are able to find the transdisciplinary connections between all subjects. For some of the PYP art classes, we are making artworks that can be integrated into Homeroom UOI. According to the unit they are inquiring, artworks created in the art class will be used as part of their presentation during UOI lessons.

Grade 1 students are working on a solar system diorama which helps reinforce what they have learned from UOI lessons as well as enables them to understand new concepts and elements of art. They will be creating 3-dimensional planets with textures, patterns and colours. Parents are also actively participating in the process, they are working together with children during the online classes to practice arts and craft-making skills. Besides the teacher, parents played an important role to guide their child at home and to work hand-in-hand with them as a team to create some awesome works.

Grade 2 students are currently learning about people, places and inner spaces. This is a topic to help students develop positive values and attitudes towards life in order to foster a caring society. They learn the importance of respecting others, embracing diversity, and gaining the understanding of people of different races, nationalities, and religious faiths.

To become more aware of faces and places around us is essential to drawing. In this unit, students will learn how to draw people in proportion and illustrate lights and shadows with tones and values. The skills they have learned in art lessons will help them to work on their UOI project of bookmaking in which they have to draw a story with characters in rural and urban communities.

五年级的学生说过他们想用自己的方式探索视觉艺术,所以新的单元是按他们的兴趣而开展的。通过阅读插画家陈志勇的《绯红树》,学生们都感受到插图的力量。书中主角的悲伤世界和孤独感以黑暗和阴郁的插图绘画出来。这绘本大大激发了学生的灵感,因为这故事复杂的感受深深牵引着大家的情绪。他们用刚学会的构图技巧画出一系列的画像来表达一个故事。学习构图技巧可以让学生在创作视觉作品时懂得找到焦点并吸引观赏者的目光。
Grade 5 students expressed their desire to explore drawing in their own way, so the new unit was developed based on their interest. They were introduced to the power of illustration through the book of The Red Tree by Shaun Tan. The character's sad world and loneliness are illustrated with dark and gloomy illustrations. The picture book inspired students a lot as it tells a story with complex emotions that they deeply connected with. They are now composing a sequence of images to convey a story by using new skills of compositions. Learning composition allows students to find focus and draw people's eyes to that part when they are creating a visual piece.
经历过几个月的在线学习后,我们的学生渐渐培养出独立性和责任感等不同的优秀品质。能够看着学生们变成一群充满爱心的学习者,真的让我惊叹。尽管大家遥远相隔,学生在网课时也表现出同理心并互相帮助。从传统课堂学习转变为在家学习,让老师和家长能够见证学生的成长!
Throughout these few months of online learning, our students have developed different qualities such as independence and responsibility. It is also amazing to witness how students have become a caring community of learners. Even though they are separated by distance, students show empathy and help each other during virtual classes. The transition of learning from home has enabled teachers and parents to see our students shine!
