Helping your Child Transition to a New School Year
Whether your child is relocating to a new school in China or entering a new grade, change involves a mix of emotions, patience and adapting. Some students are excited, others nervous or even scared. How can I help my child adapt to the change? Here are a few tips to help your child transition to a new school year:
Talk it out- Talk about the school, the location, teachers, and changes to expect. More they know about the expectations and changes, the better.
Share- Talk about experiences that involved change. For example, recall, their 1st day of middle school or moving to a new city. Discussing experiences related to change gives hope and reassurance that change will be okay and that change is not new. It is something that they have already done!
Positive mind set- Focus on the positive. Make a list of things that they can lookforward to this year. Talk about your child's positive qualities and what they have to offer. Change can be fun!
Investigate- Find out as much as you can about school events. School brochures or websites are great places to find information. Help your child identify hobbies/clubs, interests that the school has to offer. This sets the path for starting the school year smoothly.
Connect- Help your child be familiar with adults at the school such as counselors and teachers to help with transition. Encourage your child to connect with peers by joining the school team/events.
Listen and collaborate- Listen to your child's concerns. It is very natural for parents to want to immediately suggest solutions however, it is important that we take time to listen to what they have to say.
Reassure and provide support- Reassure them that it's okay to have different feelings on moving to a new school/grade. Collaborate on problem solving.
The counseling department looks forward to supporting your child to have a great year at NCIC-Immersion School. Please feel free to contact us for any support.
