Happiness comes from struggle
Every day on this planet, whether we are aware of it or not, there are many things happening. Hunger, plague, terror and war still threaten the lives of children and their families in some countries and regions. In contrast, we are living a comfortable life in a well-off city, in a peaceful and prosperous country. We have a loving and caring family and a beautiful school. Just think about how happy we are.
But such happiness was unimaginable 71 years ago, when our people were suffering from hunger and war. To achieve such happiness for Chinese people, 71 years ago, tens of thousands of courageous martyrs struggled fearlessly and even shed their blood and lost their lives. To achieve such happiness for Chinese people, during the past 71 years, hundreds of millions of our predecessors have struggled tirelessly and shed their sweat. We should understand where the happiness comes from. Just as President Xi Jinping said, happiness comes from struggle. We should always remember those heroes who sacrificed their time and lives for our happiness.
“Happiness comes from struggle” – this truth works for families and nations. Dear students and young teachers, please ask your parents and grandparents about their stories to find out the source of your happiness. You might not be interested in their stories because of different backgrounds or generation gaps. But every adversity, every hardship, every victory, every success, is an inspiration and a beacon. Behind every happy family is always a successful parent and every successful parent has a story of struggle.
“Happiness comes from struggle” – this truth works for you and your parents. There is a causal relationship between struggle and happiness. Without the struggle of your parents and the older generation, your happiness would not be possible. As the future generation, young teachers and students, please remember that without your struggle, there is no future. The law of natural selection implies that only the fittest survive. Maybe your parents never hold you to higher standards with regard to your academic performance or the future because they do not want you to be overwhelmed by hardship. Maybe they have the money and connections to help you get into a school or find a job. But such parents are short-sighted and eventually you are the one who suffers. If you rely too much on our parents and refuse to struggle, then when you grow up, you will not be able to support your own family and ensure a happy life for your children. Two things should be definitely avoided: As a student, you should avoid nepotism, and as a grown-up, avoid living off your parents.
I would like to conclude today’s speech with two equations. The first equation: “A happy life” equals “dream” plus “struggle”. In physics, we use “vector” to describe a quantity that has both magnitude and direction. In real life, your dream defines the direction and your struggle defines the magnitude. The second equation: “Struggle” equals “bravery” plus “wisdom”. When two men compete against each other, the brave one wins. When two brave men compete, the wise one wins.
