一百多年前,著名的教育家张之洞先生早已提到,中国放眼看世界,学校在“全勤习洋文”的同时,必须强调“不得废弃中国文辞”。
NCIC-Immersion一直秉持着母语与英语教育相融合的双语言双文化的教育理念。母语教育是二语教育的坚实基础,我们需要融汇语言习得与运用、文化传承与迁移、文学欣赏与审美提升等方面,在实践中提高学生在中文方面的听、说、读、写能力,提升他们的中国语言综合运用能力。
教材设计与改革,为中国语文教育提供了良好的教学资源,但真正要将此落到实处,实现教育目标还需要一个相当重要的因素——教学策略。很多人对国际教育的评价是“快乐地学习”,但每个人对其解读都不同,让我们到Immersion中文课堂探个究竟,到底学生是如何达到快乐学习。
1、能力培养标准化
每个学科包括中文课,再也不会出现通过分数来笼统评价学生能力高低,老师们在教授知识的同时,培养学生运用标准(Rubric)培养自主评价,自主学习的能力。整个学习过程,学生目标明确,衡量学业水平的不只是老师,还有自己。
2、在合作中探究
中文学习在课堂一样能通过合作的形式来达成事半功倍的效果。比如在学习商朝历史的时候,学生并没有只听老师的讲授,而是通过进入不同的考古研究小组,一同讨论和研究老师准备的“信使”,挖掘其中的历史信息。感知历史的同时还能通过讨论和分享达到更专注而高效的学习。
3、联系生活,在思辨中提高语文素养
北大中文系教授陈平原先生说过,“‘母语教育’不仅仅是读书识字,还牵涉知识、思维、审美、文化立场等。” 我们的中文课将中国语言与文化传承与发展与学生实际生活紧密联系,学生们在思辨的同时,增加了独立表达与展示的机会,提高了演说能力。
双语教育将母语与二语教育有机结合,不仅需要平衡语言能力的培养步调,还需要考验教师团队在教学方法和策略上的一致性,才能帮助学生在学习中达到学科互相贯通,能力与素养不断加强的效果。

Developing Students’ Critical Thinking Skills through Chinese Class
More than a hundred years ago, the famous educator Mr. Zhang Zhidong mentioned that China kept an eye on the world and schools must emphasize to students to “never give up learning Chinese” while they “studied foreign language with perseverance.”
NCIC-Immersion has always adhered to the bilingual and bicultural education philosophy that combines Chinese and English teaching. Chinese learning is a solid foundation for bilingual learning. We need to combine language use, cultural transfer (connections to real life), literary appreciation, etc. to improve students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Chinese, thereby improving students’ comprehensive Chinese language ability.
The design and reform of teaching materials have provided good instructional resources for Chinese language teaching. However, to effectively implement curriculum resources and achieve educational goals, quality teaching strategies are needed. Many people's evaluation of international education is students "learning happily,” but everyone interprets this differently. Let us go to NCIC-Immersion’s Chinese Class to find out how students achieve the goal of happy learning.
1. Standardization of Learning Ability
Each subject, including Chinese courses, will no longer use scores to assess students' ability in general. While teaching content knowledge, teachers also train students to use the standards/rubrics to develop their ability to self-evaluate and take ownership over their learning. Throughout the learning process, students have clear goals. It is not just teachers who measure academic performance but also students themselves.
2. Collaborative Inquiry
Chinese learning in the classroom can also achieve a multiplier effect through collaboration. For example, when studying the history of the Shang Dynasty, students do not just listen to the teacher's lecture; rather, students work together in archaeological research groups to dig out historical information and study the "messages" prepared by the teacher. While perceiving history, they can also achieve more focused and efficient learning through discussion and sharing.
3. Real-life Connections and Improved Chinese Literacy through Critical Thinking
Mr. Chen Pingyuan, a professor within the Chinese Department of Peking University, said, “Mother tongue learning is not only about reading and literacy, but also involves knowledge, thinking, aesthetics, and cultural standpoints.” Our Chinese class closely connects the inheritance and development of Chinese language and culture with students’ actual life experiences. While thinking critically, students have more opportunities for independent expression and presentation to improve their speaking skills.
Bilingual education organically combines mother tongue and second language education. It not only needs to balance the pace of language ability learning but also needs the teacher teams’ consistent application of effective instructional methods and strategies in order to help students achieve the effect of disciplinary integration, continuous ability enhancement, and academic goal achievement.
