Immersion Culture |Letter From Principal Yeung
To All Parents,
It is now exactly one month since I returned to campus.
There are several reasons that I am joyful to finally be present with the NCIC-Immersion community. I have enjoyed meeting you in person.
I have spent the majority of my time noticing, and discovering the variety of instructional strategies that exist inside and outside of the classrooms. I have witnessed a variety of interactions that allowed students to draw conclusion after thoughtful evaluation, address complex issues and resolve conflicts, and evaluate then choose appropriate responses to new situations.
Both elementary and secondary students experience these learning goals through the program of Second Step® during Advisory.
The Second Step® is “a holistic approach to building supportive communities for every child through social-emotional learning.”
As students acquire the academic knowledge and skills, they are also taught tools to self-manage, to form relations with others and the world, to be responsible in making decisions, to be self-aware, and to be socially aware. These tools contribute to making learning alive and relevant for the students as they process the information with their classmates.
Our Advisory supports NCIC in the building of a collaborative school community and culture.
Second Step® runs through all grade levels at NCIC-Immersion School in order to create a culture of respect, safety, and compassion.
Specifically, the Elementary curriculum includes: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, problem solving.
We have prepared booklets of activities about the learning (HomeLinks) for each Elementary family to do at home.
The studies for Secondary students include mindsets & goals, thoughts, emotions and decisions, recognizing bullying & harassment, and managing relationships & social conflicts.
Secondary parents might have noticed that the Registrar sends out weekly updates on the lessons that students will learn during the week.
NCIC students explore and study these topics so that they can achieve a balanced education and learn more about themselves and others.
As stated in our belief, family is the primary influence on an individual’s development and learning. We ask that you make the time to complete the activities with your Elementary students, or learn about the topics and find appropriate times in the evenings or weekends to reinforce the student’s learning at home.
Together, we will see our students grow in confidence, develop an ability to make appropriate choices, collaborate with others in work and play, and attain a better understanding of others and the world.
