What Does the Research Say About Screen Addiction?
By now we have all heard or read about the overwhelming body of evidence pointing to screen addiction worldwide in all nations and across all age groups. As educators, we recognize that it’s also possible, indeed likely that you have already observed overuse of the Internet, social media, gaming, smartphone use among your own children. In schools now there is a growing trend of awareness that this is very negatively affecting K-12 student abilities to remain focused and dedicated to schoolwork.

What is going on here? Social Media companies and game developers all play by the same rule book when they’re developing their apps. Social network developers and online shopping and gaming developers are all in the business of keeping the user’s attention focused on their applications as long as they can so that they can generate revenues not from the end-users themselves but from selling end-user preferences and interest to advertisers.
Social networks, online gaming and online shopping apps can become highly addictive. The built-in features such as the use of ‘Likes’ and online shopping apps that keep showing you products and services that are specifically tailored to your personal tastes and interests are also working on our children. But our children are easy targets because they haven’t learned yet the importance of time management and turning back to work to meet deadlines.
How is TWIS Being Proactive in This Issue?
At Tungwah Wenzel International School, we are committed to raising student awareness of the risk of becoming dependent on smartphone use and to favor that addictive behavior over school homework. We are explicitly teaching students about the dangers of ‘becoming hooked on the experience’ and the importance of being able to break free of addictive cycles through our Pastoral Care Program.
We communicate to TWIS students the value of focusing their energy on homework or other productive pursuits such as music, arts and sports as worthwhile alternatives to social media.
During school time, the use of e-device is being monitored to ensure that e-devices are solely being used for academic purposes.
In our Boarding Program, there is a time limit for e-device use as well. Additionally, students use ‘dumb or ordinary phones’ in order to maintain communication with mom and dad but without the distraction of internet browsing in smartphones.
What Can Parents Do?
We ask parents to be mindful of this important issue. Please remind your child of the dangers of overuse and do so by reminding them that the games they use, the social networks they participate in, the online shopping experiences that they enjoy are all designed from the ground up to captivate and hold the user’s attention for as long as possible.
Your child will need your support and constant reminder in order to break their attention away from these highly captivating experiences. We suggest that you discuss this issue with your child and try to model for them at home a non-addictive pattern of use. For example, dinner time is meant for face-to-face conversation and therefore, phones should not be consulted during this time. Parents can also set a time limit – an hour before going to bed can help children sleep better.
Parents can continue educating themselves about the dangers of smartphone addiction through contemplation of their own usage patterns and then open discussions with their children about this important issue to help them see the dangers that it represents to their lives and to their academic success. You are also encouraged to have a look at the documentary named The Social Dilemma.
