“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”
— Writer Elizabeth Barrett Browning dedicated this iconic poem to her husband Robert Browning but her famous sonnet could just as easily declare love for poetry itself. And, love of poetry is something we celebrated here at BMH on World Poetry Day!
In 1999, UNESCO established 21st March every year as World Poetry Day. Luckily, this celebratory day coincided with the ending of our English poetry writing unit. Throughout this unit of work, children developed an appreciation for different poetry styles and writing features and were exposed to modern and classical texts from Edward Lear to Michael Rosen.
To show off our writing skills on World Poetry Day, we invited parents for a ‘Learn with your Child’ taster in all English lessons from Prep 1 to Senior 7.
Parents and children enjoyed writing about a multitude of themes like spring, galaxies and mums, demonstrating application of rhyme schemes, rhythm, structure and figurative language.
Children were so proud and excited to share the classroom with their parents; something we hope to do more of in the coming months.
