PYP Field Trip|
Spring is in full bloom, and it is time for a field trip! Recently, our students followed the pace of spring and embarked on a wonderful outdoor-learning journey. From exploring nature to visiting museums to traveling around the "world", our students have been inquiring about real-life situations. Let's come and experience some of the outdoor classrooms from PYP with us!
Have you ever found yourself in a place you have never been before? This was the experience PYP3 students faced in March. But were we scared? No, because as part of our Unit Of Inquiry, Where We are in Place and Time, we studied orienteering in PSPE classes with Mr. Jaime, who was already waiting for us with maps, compasses and checkpoints at Songshan Lake Central Park!
Orienteering is an activity in which participants use a map, compass and observation skills to reach each location marked on the map in turn. In groups, we headed off to find the checkpoints.
After the first course, everybody enjoyed some more refreshments, including the delicious snacks the mothers had prepared. Then we went on to a more challenging map. This time the course involved crossing bridges and finding some hidden checkpoints, and the area was much bigger. It was very exciting for everybody to be able to show their directional skills. This time we were definitely showing the IB Learner Profile of Risk-taker.
Then our students all made their way back to an Italian restaurant. It was time to get to work and prepare our lunch. Everybody was able to make their own pizza! The staff at the restaurant helped us to put our toppings on our prepared dough, and then we just had to wait for it to cook. This was also an opportunity to show the IB Learner Profiles of being Open-minded and Caring. Several students chose to take some pizza home with them to share with their families. It had been a big day of activity, and although everybody was exhausted, we were all feeling satisfied. And now, we are fully prepared for the next time we get lost!
PYP1 students went on a field trip to the Window of the World in Shenzhen for their UOI of Where We are in Place And Time. Have you ever imagined visiting more than 130 global attractions around the world in a few hours? The Window of the World helps students' dreams come true.
There are zones of Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa and America and in each of them, there are reproductions of the most famous landmarks of the same area in the world. In addition, our students were able to visit the World Plaza, International Street and Sculpture Zone, from which they could also experience the cultural diversity squeezed into a big space, with the Eiffel tower dominating its skyline.
Visiting the park was a great way to get the students excited about traveling the world. There were shows at different times and locations within the park, which gave the students the opportunity to experience cultural diversity firsthand, making this the perfect opportunity for the students to see the world and also make a comparison to their “own World”.
As part of their current Unit of Inquiry, "Times Gone By," PYP 2 students recently visited the local Keyuan Museum to explore and learn about everyday household items, artifacts, and ancient architecture. The museum provided a unique opportunity for the students to inquire and ask critical questions about the design and purpose of objects from a bygone era.
Armed with their cameras, the students captured photos of various museum pieces, which they used to create written reflections that progressed from describing details to analyzing observations. The inquiry process not only enriched the student's understanding of history but also enhanced their language skills, as they practiced using adjectives to describe nouns and authoring informative articles.
Reflections from PYP2 Students
“I learned some houses can be different in old days. I liked the flower room and I also like Chinese old things.”
——Judy
“I think the old items are beautiful and I am learning the old things are difficult to make beautiful. The chairs are made of wood and stone, but we make from plastic and metal.”
——Pietro
“I learned about Chinese history, and I see a lot of old houses are tall and old. This old house only has one floor, and my house is tall and has many floors.”
——Mike
In their reflections, our students showed an appreciation for the beauty of ancient objects and the craftsmanship that went into creating them. However, they also observed the difficulties that come with making items beautiful without the modern materials and technology that we have today.
The museum experience offered the students a glimpse into Chinese history, as they marveled at the tall, old houses and compared them to their own homes. For many, the visit was a chance to learn about different aspects of Chinese culture, from the colorful windows to traditional clothing and local cuisine. Overall, the Keyuan Museum visit was a valuable learning experience for the PYP2 students, allowing them to see history come to life and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
