In this unit, we are starting to inquire about the correlations between our home, kindergarten, and streets: each place has its own rules we can understand and follow, and each place has its own special words related to the theme. We thought that cars are cars, but they have so many names, and each type of car has its own purpose. And it’s only land transportation! How much more exciting can it be?! Let’s find out!

we began with the letter S and the word STOP as a first step into the world of transportation.

When we begin doing something we found where to stop. If we know the word stop, then we will go further to learn its opposite: go!

We made these stop signs with the word go on the back, so we can connect colors and actions. Interesting, where else can we see red and green lights telling us to stop and go?

With the letter T, we learned about the traffic light and immediately decided to make one for our classroom. Red light means it’s lesson time and we should sit nicely. Yellow - prepare for the next period. Green - playtime.

Why and Because

We started approaching thinking in English and speaking in simple sentences. Why do cars have round (circle) wheels? Because square wheels can’t roll. We found it out with a little experiment during one of our activities.

Students started to explore transportation by themselves during playtime: we make cars, and streets, use traffic signs, and take part in traffic too!

We learned about different kinds of trucks: regular trucks, fire trucks, and garbage trucks. Then we started to clean up using garbage trucks from our inventory.

Water Transportation

We are always trying not to forget what we learned before, so all the colors, prepositions, and shapes become entwined. If you want to teach a nursery student, you have to become one! Here is our schematic picture of what we can see on and under the sea, of course including transportation.

It’s always more fun to learn words with their opposites. Big and small, hot and cold even red and blue. And now it’s time for a couple more! Heavy and Light. A ship is big and heavy; a boat is light and small. If we can’t touch it, then we can take a look at it and conclude that if it is big, then it’s probably heavy, and if it is small, then it might be light.

Queenie is taking Via on a ride. She said she won’t get tired because Via is not heavy. We park our bikes in the parking zone when we go back to the classroom because that’s how the world works!

Float and sink

We are finishing learning about water transportation with the letter W and a pair of new opposites: float and sink. If it is light then it can float, if it is heavy it might sink (sometimes). Why boats don’t sink? they are pretty heavy...That’s because ......

Inquiry teaching has often been described using the metaphor of a journey – it’s like traveling with the learners to a destination.

Students begin their inquiries by understanding that things we’ve learned a bit earlier can be understood differently through the changing of the depth of perception. If we learned the word Move, now we understand that we can move fast and slow; Later we understand that we move fast if we’re light, and slow when we’re heavy;then we know that sometimes we can’t move at all.

Before this unit, all the students answered “NO” to the question “ Can you fly?”. Now they know that they can fly in an airplane or on a rocket! And they found it out themselves because they made such a complex inquiry.
