来自学术校长Christopher Moses的新年贺词
Greetings from Mumbai, where, along with eight students, and Miao and Wei, we prepare to ring in the new year.
While we’ll be a few hours later than everyone in Shanghai, that slight time difference represents a far more astounding opportunity for growth and learning that has been enjoyed over the past nine days.
In students’ introduction to the World Leadership School curriculum, they identified their comfort zones – what, importantly, allows them to feel safe, confident, and connected. Then, even more importantly, they began to learn about, and differentiate, what’s possible through “stretching” into new experiences, while understanding, mitigating, and avoiding risks.
Done properly and continuously, striving for such self-awareness takes hard work, increased perception, and enhanced situational awareness. Often what we worry about comes far more from anxiety and socially generated fear – like terrorism – than the actual; and, indeed, what may seem rather pedestrian, like crossing the street or riding in a car, requires far more sensible strategies for safety.
Most valuable, then, is to stretch. Just like with physical activity, stretching makes us more flexible, it improves our agility, and gives us the chance to grow: to strengthen ourselves, to build new relationships, to accept worthwhile challenges and to learn in meaningful ways. Stretching creates a larger comfort zone, and given us a better sense of our own capabilities.
Of course, routines and comfort are crucial, too, and I’m no stranger to the regular and ordinary pleasures of everyday life: my morning coffee, quiet time with WaWa and MeeMaw (my cats, for those who may not know), and the joy of life-long friendships. Yet to return to these things after stretching reminds us how, why, and for what reasons we truly value these comforts. It’s what we do, truly, happily, meaningful, for ourselves and those we love—without question, without wondering what others might think or how many likes will be clicked our way, without a sense that we need more. Comfort—through stretching—comfort becomes a greater, genuine contentment enriched by a sense of purpose that actually transcends rather anything “ordinary.”
For 2020, I wish all of us the opportunity to stretch, to welcome the new year, and to enrich our ever-emerging opportunities for real learning and growth.
