What else on earth do lawyers do?
Ms Zhou Hong got her bachelor’s degree in law from Northwest University and then her master’s degree from China University of Political Science and Law. After that, she studied in the UK and got LLM master's degree in law. She has had 30 years experience in being a practicing lawyer, focusing on foreign financing, merger, and reorganization. She was engaged in the financing, restructuring business of a number of domestic state-owned, commercial banks, and later cooperated with world-famous international law firms to provide legal advice for cross-border finance, asset mergers and acquisitions. Currently, she is working as Vice President for China in a multinational corporation group .
1.独立思考,反思的能力;
2.有敢于追求真理的勇气和正直的心,律师行业这点很重要;
“Lawyers engage in lawsuits.” “Lawyers are very eloquent.” “Lawyers can make a lot of money.” These are students’ answers to Ms Zhou’s questions.
What are the qualifications for a lawyer? Ms. Zhou believes that he or she must have a sense of professional honor first. Ms. Zhou told us a story. Soon after she started working as a lawyer, she had to deal with an emergency: several miners were buried alive, and their family and representatives had a bitter quarrel with the boss because the bodies began to decay and stink. Ms. Zhou calmed down and made her choice in two minutes. She asked the owner of the mine to clean up the scene, talked to representatives of the miners and their family, and kept the emergency under control. Then she settled the dispute within two and a half hours by explaining the legal provisions to the miners and their families and negotiating with the owner of the mine. The next day a funeral for the victims took place. Her efforts and efficiency were highly appreciated by the police at that time.
She thought that the experience of being able to help others and fulfilling one’s own value strengthened her sense of honor as a lawyer and contributed to the first step taken to do any type of job well.
Ms. Zhou believed that students should develop and cultivate themselves in the following aspects.
1. Having the ability to think independently and reflect on oneself
2. Having the courage to seek the truth and integrity (very important for a lawyer)
3. Good at catching details. Ms Zhou told us that, for example, the Zhejiang Wahaha Co. Ltd. could have started a joint venture with the Danone Co. Ltd. but for the negligence of a lawyer at that time to fail to register the transfer agreement with the national patent office, causing the Danone brand to disappear in China’s market for several years and a loss of tens of millions of Euros. So, the details are the key to success or failure.
Ms. Zhou answered several questions of concern to some students: It is absolutely useful to study law overseas and return to China to further study; She also explained the procedures of studying law in the US. In addition, some students also asked which line of the lawyer profession would provide promising prospects. Zhou believed that intellectual property and environmental categories would promise well.
It is more important to learn outstanding people’s way of thinking and their way of exploring the world.

From 2014 to 2015, she worked closely with Tencent to set up Whisper China.. She is the product marketing manager at Uber , China, and guests for technology companies such as Tencent and Alibaba.
[Edited by Lynn Liao] Ms. Zheng humorously told us that because she liked apples and had two apple-shaped muscles on her cheeks, she chose "Apple Sister” as her net name.
Ms. Zheng studied economics and environment at Princeton University. She said it was her "amateur" experience that shaped her views on the world and that the university education equipped us with dialectical thinking and a worldview. After graduation, she promoted financing products in the financial industry, and later joined a venture company because she wanted to do something to change people's lives. In her spare time, she was also an environmentalist.
She wrote a book called "606 Days Without A Lease "in which she described the 99 different lives she lived when she stayed in her spare time with 99 different people doing various kinds of jobs such as painting. After constant exploration, “Apple sister” finally managed to find the profession she loved most.
She told kids to keep in touch, keep trying and treat each experience as an opportunity to make themselves more mature. She also said that kids need to learn different ways of thinking and broaden their horizons.
The only way to live a successful life is to live in one’s own favourite way.

Formerly she worked as an analyst for wall street investment banks and private equity, and she also worked in Morgan Stanley's investment banking division and Boston Audax Group private equity firm. In 2012, She came to shanghai where she founded VCLEANSE.
[Edited by Nebula Liu] Ms. Zhang shared her life stoies with us: She graduated from Fuxing high School and took the SAT1 test that few people in China took at that time and later SAT2 test. At Harvard, she chose to major in applied mathematics which she handled with ease. After graduation, she worked at the headquarters of an investment bank in Wall Street financial area, New York. Having specialized in mergers and acquisitions for 2 years, she changed to make investments, and then she returned to China and started a business called VCLEANSE. VCLEANSE is the first company in China to produce cold-pressed fruit and vegetable juice, making use of natural food to detoxify and clean up human body. Her company grew from originally a small store with an area of only 20 square meters to today's best modern factory covering 5,000 square meters. She met with many difficulties all the way and once her company was nearly ruined. Someone asked her, “ If you could live your life over, would you still choose to painstakingly start your own business?
Ms. Zhang answered, “ The only way to live a successful life is to live in one’s own favourite way. “ She reminds herself every day to keep an upbeat state.
The best way to plan for your career is to be yourself.

[Edited by Tony Mao]”Many choices in life don’t necessarily yield immediate results.” This was how Mr. Liu reminded those who choose their careers for the first time: It is more important that people should learn more from their surroundings.
“Value the spark of every thought.” An idea that reappears may be the very life you want to live. Get the idea involved in your decision-making and the idea will get closer to you. Then it depends on how you stick to your own choices.
"Career > Industry, Career < Industry" These were the key words mentioned by Mr. Liu. At the beginning, a good career may provide you with much valuable knowledge; after that, the career is smaller than the industry, for, with strong ability, you can do what you like and want to do, and there will be more opportunities for you to achieve your goals.
Mr. Liu also introduced to us "NEXTEV ", a company manufacturing automobiles running on new energy, showing us how advanced and rich our unique digital age is.
Mr. Liu's words sounded as if he were saying near my ears :" learning is to help you find what you are really interested in ";" What can really help you is your leaning capacity ".
Mr. Liu's speech served not only as an introduction to his industry but also as a lecture on expanding our thinking.
