Doodling Experiment
At the beginning, the two students Waine and Eva said that contrary to our usual cognition that "doodles would distract our attention", this "aimless painting activity" could actually help us focus and keep awake in a sense, thus improving performance and making us better at other tasks.
Jackie Andrade, a psychology professor at the University of Plymouth in the UK, once conducted an "experiment on doodles". Waine and Eva introduced us to the purpose, sample control, process and conclusion of Andrade’s experiment in detail. In the experiment, 40 subjects were asked to listen to a boring recorded dialogue and get some information. The results showed that subjects who listened and doodled could remember more names of people and places in the recording.
The two students did not stop here after they had a deep understanding of the process of the experiment, but carried it out on campus and redid the experiment! They asked the foreign teacher Paul to record a recording that was consistent with the original experiment, which was in a flat and boring tone. 44 students of different grades were selected as subjects by chance sampling. Finally, 39 effective experimental samples were obtained, including 20 in the doodle group and 19 in the control group.
In order to improve the subjects' anxiety and stress the purpose of the experiment, the experimenters chose to organize the subjects to participate in the experiment when they were about to leave school or class. They told the students in the doodle group that their doodles were just to alleviate boredom, and the control group also got a A4 paper of the same size with horizontal lines. After the completion of the first group of experiments, they adjusted the order of the experiments and asked the students in the doodle group to recall the names of places they heard in the recording, while the students in the control group wrote down people’s names. All steps and processes were consistent with the original experiment. Through hands-on experiments, they finally came to the conclusion same as the original experiment: under certain circumstances, doodles will improve people's attention.
After the experiment, they also evaluated the reliability and validity of the experiment and the representativeness of the samples from all aspects of the experiment, analyzed the advantages, disadvantages and results of the experiment, put forward the ethical problems related to the experimental research, and pointed out the application of the experimental results in real life.
This is a scientific experiment with complete and standardized program design and operation. "Practice goes deeper than theoretic knowledge." We admire and are impressed by the excellent scientific quality of these two students, who have demonstrated their "non-bookish" and "non-authoritarian" spirit of scientific investigation and experimentation.
Teachers-sharing
The value of gratitude
“Who are you; what values are important to you; how will you treat others?” At the beginning of the sharing, Teacher Jeremy asked everyone to think about these questions.
“The world will ask you who you are, and if you do not know, the world will tell you.” By making gratitude a part of ourselves and focusing on the positive things in our lives, we can gain endless energy and motivation to move forward. Teacher Jeremy then went on to explain how to build the habit of gratitude in our lives and how to show appreciation to others. “In a world where you can choose to be anything you want, choose to be kind”, and learn to be grateful.
Honor Students
Mid-term Recognition
In the end, Teacher Zhang commended the students who had maintained their hard work and perseverance during the online teaching period and who had achieved excellent results and made great progress in the mid-term examinations. Homeroom teachers also sent words of encouragement to the students. For example, Teacher Joan quoted the saying "you must have patience, and you will be successful; have forbearance, and your virtue will be great", encouraging students to have a patient spirit and a forgiving mind.
With the normal pace of teaching and learning resumed and the colourful activities renewed in the cloud, the mid-term examination and the parents' meeting have both seen smooth progress, and SHTCS TALK now celebrates the official return. Persevere in faith and victory is bound to come.
