While assessment is a broad topic that includes a variety of forms and functions, this article is intended to describe only one of the many ways in which we measure student learning: through the use of standardized assessment tools. Specifically, we will review four of the assessments that are administered during the school year that provide information related to students’ reading, math, and language proficiency.
MAP: Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) is a computer-adaptive assessment administered to elementary and secondary students in grades 3-9 at the beginning and end of the school year to track student progress in reading, language, and math. Students, parents, and teachers can use MAP data to identify where students are in their development of subject-area skills. MAP Reading data can also be used to support students’ decision-making as they select best-fit books. Additionally, as a norm-referenced test, MAP provides data regarding students’ progress relative to their grade-level peers. MAP is administered in English.
F&P: The Fountas & Pinnell (F&P) Benchmark Assessment is administered at NCIC-Immersion to all students in grades PY-G2 to determine students' independent and instructional reading levels. While assessing, teachers are able to observe and document students’ reading behaviors, gain insight into students' comprehension of texts, and identify next steps in students' reading growth. Similar to MAP Reading, F&P data supports students, parents, and teachers as they identify books that align with students’ current reading proficiency. The F&P assessment is administered in English.
Level Chinese: Level Chinese is an online reading assessment system that assesses students’ Chinese reading skills and provides information for teachers and parents as they help students select books that align with their current reading levels and track their reading progress over time. The Level Chinese assessment includes two parts: Reading Foundation (language and fictional texts) and Informational Text (non-fiction texts). Level Chinese is administered at NCIC-Immersion three times throughout the school year in grades 1-9. In addition to reading assessments, the Level Chinese program also provides online leveled readers to support students as they develop their Chinese reading skills.
WIDA MODEL: WIDA’s Measure of Developing English Language (MODEL) measures students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in English. WIDA MODEL is administered at the start of each year to incoming students and once annually to returning students to support teachers’ instructional decisions as well as to monitor students’ language proficiency progress over time. (Note: For SY2020-21, WIDA MODEL is being administered twice since COVID-19 conditions did not allow for an end-of-year assessment during the previous school year.) As with MAP, F&P, and Level Chinese, student growth as captured by WIDA MODEL also serves as one data point for program evaluation.
