——Gary Malmon
——Gary Malmon
“The more I know the more I know I don’t know. The wiser I am, the more I want to learn.”——Gary Malmon
For millennia, people have reflected on the differing values of knowledge vs. wisdom. In the information-explosion world we live in, knowing the value of wisdom is more important than ever. There is a pyramid of importance in which some have described data at the bottom, with information above and then knowledge above that. At the very top of the pyramid is wisdom, for all knowledge and information is useless without proper judgement, which needs to be refined over time with experience and keen reflection.
The lower pyramid will continue to be increasingly accessible with the touch of fingertips to keyboard or screen. The top of the pyramid will be increasingly elusive as we become consumed with too much of the often useless lower tiers. What to do? Choose the path towards wisdom.
Spend more of your time thinking about how you are using information and applying knowledge. Remember to think slow as well as fast--we are easy to fool ourselves into thinking we have the right solution, so be sure to reflect and take perspective when confronted with complex issues. And remember to think about how you are thinking (being thoughtful) and feel how you are feeling (being sensitive). There is no right way to think or feel, but the moment you become self-aware and practice meta-awareness at the cognitive and emotional level, you are in a space to activate your wise self.
Your body is also one way to gauge the efficacy of your wisdom practice. When you thoughtfully and sensitively engage the world, you will feel more at peace with yourself and become increasingly aware of the intimate connection of yourself with everything and everyone. True wisdom is ultimately a release from the ego that drives you to announce yourself in the world. It is embracing the humble self which instead drives you to learn and grow so that you may bring greater value to the world.
“Knowledge allows you to appreciate the profound beauty of a flower. Wisdom allows you to flower.” ——Gary Malmon
