“Teacher , I caught the light!”
In K2, we have started our new Light and Shadow Inquiry Unit.
For our initial engagement we entered the dark room, with all kinds of lights, the children were glowing with excitement. They used their inquiring minds to find out how to use the different items.
Then, following our first line of inquiry, we focused on different light sources. We looked at natural light and man made light. Where does the light come from? We found many sources of man made light, including lava lamps, torches and the classroom light.
Also, we looked at the properties of light such as size, colour and brightness of lights and when they are used.
The children loved all the experiments around reflection and refraction of light. They made beautiful rainbow drawings using mirrors. They used the sun light from the classroom window to make beautiful colours on the ceiling and the ground.
We began to move onto shadows, the children loved playing with their shadows. They made puppets and told stories. We also went on an exciting shadow hunt around the field. We captured our shadows and turned them into pieces of art.
While looking at shadows, we took pictures of our silhouettes and played a fun guessing game. The students loved finding their friends around the classroom and guessing who each were.
Using our classroom toys we created shadow art and explored different shapes, we compared our drawings and matched it to the correct toys just by looking at the shadow.
