In term 1, as part of the inquiry unit which is about children rights and ways to alleviate inequalities, Prep 2 teachers, students and parents organized a Charity Sale on 11 November 2022 to raise funds to support the needs of children at Longhua District Runze School. Runze school is a special school serving families with special needs children and offers a 9-year primary to junior secondary programme.
The BMH community raised over RMB 9000 in the charity sale and used the donation to purchase a set of Montessori teaching aids, a series of sensory integration training equipment and stationery for the students. With the relaxation of pandemic restrictions, on 13 February 2023, BMH students, parents and staff representatives paid a visit to Runze School to get to know the children and staff there and present the donated items to the school.
We were warmly welcome by the students and staff upon our arrival. With their big smile, the students were holding hands to lead us when entering the campus. On our way to the classrooms, we were impressed by the amazing artworks displayed in the hallways. The beautiful paintings, paper art and even embroidery demonstrated students' creativity and characters.
Our students then split into 2 groups to interact with the Runze students. One group visited the Prep 2 class named Clove and the other joined the Junior high class named Begonia.
At Clove, Runze students warmly introduced themselves, followed by introduction from BMH students. Students then worked together for a PE challenge. They needed to help each other and use their hands and legs to move pass different obstacles and achieve the goal of shooting the soft toy carrots into the basketball hoops. All students enjoyed the game so much.
After the PE challenge, students sat in groups and worked together for a wooden spoon craft. With the spoon and stickers, student made different animal faces and gave each other as a souvenir.
At Begonia, the class began with an introduction from Runze students, followed by a sign language song which everyone joined in. BMH students mixed with Runze students in their table groups and together they made tissue paper art. Using colourful tissue paper, students tore it into small pieces and rolled them into small paper balls and stuck them onto a piece of paper to form a picture. It was a good activity to train fine motor skills and develop patience.
As we approached the end of the visit, Runze students and staff walked us to the gate and saw us off. During the visit, we were impressed by the patience, commitment and professionalism demonstrated by the staff, despite all the difficulties they were facing, and also the positivity and passion of learning shown by the students. We look forward to building a long term collaboration relationship between the two schools and mutual professional learning and growth as learners and educators.
