At VPA, we place great emphasis on the transition from Kindergarten to Primary School. Recently, we organized Transition Experience Workshops in several Victoria Kindergartens, providing exciting opportunities for children to explore and experience. We also invited kindergarten students to visit our Year 1 classrooms at VPA and engage in various subjects.
Since last month, our Year 1 students and teachers visited the neighboring Lilin Victoria Kindergarten to introduce them to the life in primary school. As a result, the other Victoria Kindergarten students have also started learning about primary school. Walking through the corridors, you can see them engaging in various inquiries related to primary school.
In order to provide them with a more tangible experience of the differences between primary school and kindergarten, Ms. Smit, Ms. Xiao, and Ms. Lin from VPA specifically visited Victoria Kindergartens to show how English, STEAM, and Chinese classes are integrated at VPA.
Ms. Smit, who is well-loved by both children and parents, conducted an engaging English class for the children, using an interesting picture book. The children listened attentively and were captivated by the lesson.
She also prepared worksheets for them, and the children from the kindergarten were inspired by her smile, realizing that learning in primary school can also be filled with joy.
During the Chinese class, children actively participated and shared their thoughts. Ms. Xiao was delighted with their vocabulary and believes that they will continue to make progress and achieve even better results in primary school.
Ms. Xiao also introduced the commonly used KWL learning strategy at VPA. This strategy helps students organize and explore their knowledge, questions, and learning outcomes before, during, and after the learning process.
KWL represents three steps: K (Know): Students list the information and knowledge they already know about the topic before starting the learning process. W (Want): Students generate questions they want to know or understand before beginning the learning process. L (Learned): Students summarize the new knowledge and information they have learned during or at the end of the learning process.
Hope that no matter where they go in the future, they will be able to utilize this strategy to enhance their learning
Ms. Lin's STEAM class is particularly captivating. With the help of Ozobot, she immerses the students in the world of technology and creativity.
As a high-quality bilingual school offering a "Primary School to Middle School" nine-year integrated program, Victoria Park Academy (VPA) builds upon the professional teaching foundation of Victoria Kindergarten. By combining the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum with the national curriculum, VPA embraces the essence of both, guiding students on a journey of continuous inquiry and growth.
This Thursday, we also invited some children from the senior class of Victoria Kindergarten to step into our classrooms and join our first-grade students in real primary school lessons.
They played games together
Wrote worksheets together
Teachers were also very patient
Transitioning from kindergarten to primary school is a significant milestone in many children's lives. Therefore, the various activities related to the transition may seem simple, but they hold great significance for the children.
At the end of this week's transition activities, we conducted interviews with two first-grade teachers to answer some common questions and provide helpful tips for everyone!
