Dear SIS Families,
Thank you to those who answered the last parent survey and gave their feedback about parent workshops you wish to be provided by us. We will continue to find ways to accommodate your requests and will address some of them in our upcoming ParentEDUs. Please take note of the workshops offered each week and join us to learn more about the learning and teaching that happens at SIS. There are a series of workshops being offered soon, for example, the Sensory Integration workshop series in Jingshan and the Approaches to Learning series at The Bay. We will also be sharing about our unique language programmes, CBP and FIP. We hope to see you soon!

Mandarin Reading Competition Finalists

This is the 3rd year of the SIS's Mandarin Reading Competition! We started the screening process last semester and there were about 200 students from G1 to G5 that joined this activity. All of the participants worked very hard on practicing, and finally we have 31 contestants chosen as to join the final round.
On Jan 16th-17th, 2024, we had our final round of the Mandarin reading competition. The final round challenged the contestants with a more complex reading piece. Congratulations to everyone and great job for practicing during the winter break. As a result, their performances were fabulous and impressed the audience and the judges. They are not only reading or reciting fluently, but also showing their understanding of the material with appropriate expression.
We are very proud of all the participants and wish more students will join the activity next time. Here’s the list of the contestants who joined the final round. We will announce the winners soon.

FIP Project: La Galette des Rois – King Cake

The FIP community is very glad to promote international mindedness through learning about other cultures. This week, we celebrated an ancient French tradition at SIS: la Galette des Rois (King Cake) to celebrate a feast day. Nowadays, it is a cake that is eaten throughout January and is simply a festive way to mark the new year with family and friends.
Celebrating with FIP were 21 classes who joined a fun and creative competition: the classes were to design and bake their own Galette des Rois. The tradition is to declare the king or queen by discovering the fève, the figurine hidden inside the cake. They will then get to wear the golden couronne (crown).
Students and teachers were enthusiastic about the winning of the fève – during the slicing of the galette, we asked the youngest student in the class to slip underneath the table to call out the name of the person to receive each slice!
The winning Galette des Rois this year is… well… we will find out on Friday! Stay tuned!

Celebrations in Nursery
幼儿园庆祝活动
Our Nursery B students created and explored making 'snow', they added very cold water to snow powder which changed the powder, making it freezing-cold to the touch. Teachers introduced a penguin to play with the students and they all waddled on the snow like the penguin. For children living in a warm climate like Shenzhen, the snow exploration was such an adventure!
This learning engagement supported:
Sensory Integration: The snow exploration provided a hands-on sensory experience for the children to engage with different textures, such as the freezing-cold touch of the snow, which supported their sensory development.
Creativity and Imagination: The snow play allowed the students to explore and tap into their creativity, which sparked their natural curiosity and sense of wonder.
Observation: By interacting with the penguin, the children had the chance to observe and learn about its waddling movements.
Hands-on social Learning: The snow exploration provided opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, ask questions and engage in cooperative play.

Meanwhile, the NA bunnies embraced the Chinese New Year spirit by making red and gold slime. Through this sensory experience they
Used their hands to explore various textures
Added different ingredients carefully and assessed the slime's consistency,
Decided when to make changes to ensure the slime was neither too watery nor too hard.
They exercised their fine and gross motor skills by mixing, pulling, and stretching the slime.
Engrossed in this slimy, sticky, and messy sensory exploration, the bunnies found themselves more at ease and comfortable with various textures and materials.

G1 Launches their new UOI!

Grade 1 classes are beginning the semester with excitement! In our new Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, jungles, forests, treasure islands and camping grounds have appeared in some rooms to launch the inquiry. Students collaborate to find the necessary resources to build the space, and they communicate to find how best to work with each other during these activities.
In this unit, G1 is inquiring into how goods and services allow people to satisfy their wants and needs, and how we access the resources we need to live. Part of the provocation has been to set up a remote environment where students will need to work together in groups to navigate and decide their needs to survive in these locations. What are the essentials? What will keep them alive? What do they not need to have? This initially helps the students to understand the difference between a 'want' and a 'need' and to further understand how different community groups play a role in making sure we all have what we need to live well and in harmony. Watch out for our next steps!

G2 Researchers Learn about the Earth

G2 inquirers are observing patterns through changes in landform for their next unit, How The World Works. They will research and learn about different types of landforms found all around our planet. Equipped with iPad, their prior knowledge, and collaboration skills, they begin their discovery with some events hosted at Level 5.
This unit will take our Geckos to explore the interconnectedness of mountains, valleys, rivers, deserts, caves, and more! Through research, they will uncover how these landforms are formed, their distinct characteristics, and the role they play in shaping our planet. We hope this will also foster a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world around us.

Lily from 4D continues to earn awards from various Robotics competition locally and overseas. Recently, she won the Innovation Award and the first prize in the International Signature Competition of 2023-2024 VEX Robot Asia Open. Additionally, she earned the second prize in the National VEX Robot Classic Competition of 2023-2024 held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Congratulations and we wish you all the best as you continue your preparation for the world competition!

This Monday, PSA held Pilates Club activity and the first PSA Reading Club activity!
At the Reading club, everyone shared about the recent books they have been reading and participants gained insights from each other's sharing. This activity allowed us to learn about different perspectives, our varied reading experiences, and the many ways of thinking we have. We hope that through the book club, we can make friends and encourage sustained reading habits. Please join the PSA Reading Club at 10:00 am every Monday!
Additionally, PSA also hosts Monday Pilates classes at our Jingshan campus. To join either or both events, please sign up below!

2024 SIS Calendar preorders are open! The calendars have been created under the collaboration of Housebuilding Club and SIS Strings Initiative (SSI). All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the poverty-alleviation charity Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines (Housebuilding) and also used to purchase instruments and teaching materials for less fortunate local Shekou string students (SSI).
Pre-Order Sales
We are offering a special discount for preordered calendars this year. This year, the calendars will contain photos of students from nursery through grade 12. The price is 45RMB for preorders and 60RMB for regular purchases on-site. Please fill out this form to make your preorders before Jan-21 (Sunday)!
For The Bay campus, they will be available for pick up during on-site sales on Jan-24 & Jan-26, otherwise in the main office at Ms. Zou’s desk.
For Jingshan, they will be available for pick up at Ms. Anna Xu’s desk from Jan-22 onwards.
On-Site Sales
You can purchase more calendars after pre-order closes at the on-site sale in The Bay from January 24th to 26th.
For The Bay campus, the sale will be at the main entrance where parents normally pick up their children from around 2:45 pm.
For Jingshan campus, unfortunately, there will not be an on-site sale. However, you will still be able to purchase the calendars at either Net Valley or the Bay campus.

The Shenzhen International Youth Orchestra (SIYO)
深圳国际青年管弦乐团(SIYO)
The Shenzhen International Youth Orchestra (SIYO) is a student-led orchestra initiated by 3 passionate high schoolers aiming to provide young musicians opportunities to play in advanced orchestral settings and promote classical music in our community. The orchestra has 33 players from SIS, ISNS, QSI, and other schools.
The orchestra will have their debut performance on Jan. 27th 15:00 at the Bay Campus theatre, featuring pieces by Beethoven, Elgar, Grieg, and many more! They will also be performing at ISNS on Feb. 3rd with the same set of programme.
Free entry! And external guests are welcome.
