APEC 2026 × UNDER ONE MOON

In 2026, APEC will be held in Shenzhen, welcoming people from different places, cultures, languages, and backgrounds. Through dialogue and sharing, they will discover connections with one another. For children, “connecting with the world” can begin with a simple question: “Do children in other countries look at the same moon?”

The Mid-Autumn Festival is part of China’s cultural memory, but the moon belongs to no single country. Children around the world celebrate different festivals and speak different languages, yet we all share the same moon.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, KOFA brings APEC 2026 and UNDER ONE MOON together. Starting with familiar Chinese traditions, we move beyond simply “learning about” culture, inviting children to experience connection, sharing, and cooperation through meaningful, hands-on activities.

A moon can take on many different forms when every child has a part in creating it.

Little hands leave their unique handprints—some delicate, playful, or carefully made. Each belongs to a one-of-a-kind child. When children of different ages and classes contribute their own “little piece” to the moon, it becomes more than artwork—it becomes a creation shared by the KOFA community.

This moon carries a little piece of me, and a little piece of you. We meet with all our differences, and gently place our own stories into the same moon. That is what UNDER ONE MOON hopes to help children discover: We may come from different places, but we can all share the same moon.

When light meets shadow, traditional stories take on new forms. In the Moonlight Theatre, children explore shadow puppetry and the relationship between light, shadow, characters, and stories through traditional Mid-Autumn tales such as Chang’e Flies to the Moon.

Traditional culture can be more than something “told” to children. It can be seen, explored, and expressed in their own ways. Through Chinese stories, children discover that every culture has its own stories, and understanding one another begins by listening.

Every child can begin with their own culture. In the classroom, children explore the moon, family reunion, mooncakes, lanterns, and Mid-Autumn stories through storytelling, drawing, discussion, and lantern-making.

Rather than simply memorizing “What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?”, children explore their own questions: “Why do we celebrate it?” “Why do we eat mooncakes?” Learning about their own culture helps children understand and respect others. Knowing ourselves is the first step toward discovering the world.

A piece of clothing can also open a window into culture.

This is my culture.

Children put on Hanfu and explore its sleeves, patterns, and colors, discovering: “This is what people in ancient China wore.” Through a simple piece of clothing, they experience traditional Chinese culture and carry their curiosity into the wider world. This is my culture. Knowing ourselves, while appreciating our differences.

Children knead, press, and shape dough into their own mooncakes. Through this hands-on experience, they discover mooncakes and the flavors and traditions of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.

But why do we share mooncakes? Children may not yet fully understand “sharing,” yet when their mooncakes are ready, they naturally say: “I want to take it home for Mommy and Daddy.” “I want to give one to Grandma and Grandpa.” “I want to share this with my sister.”

They may not yet explain “sharing,” but they understand it in their own way. They give what they love to those they love, and share what tastes good with family. A little mooncake carries a child’s sweetest gesture of love. Perhaps that is what Mid-Autumn reunion means—sharing sweetness with the people we love.

The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates reunion, while birthdays celebrate growth and bring warm wishes. This year, KOFA brings the festive spirit to the dining table with a special Mid-Autumn-themed meal, from ingredients to presentation, allowing children to experience reunion through familiar flavors and celebration.

Children gather around the table, enjoy a meal together, celebrate our September birthday stars, and share this special festive moment.

One table, one Mid-Autumn reunion. One shared meal, one moment of childhood joy. We hope the festival is not only something children see and experience, but something that truly becomes part of their everyday lives.

If children around the world were all looking at the same moon right now, what would you like to say to them?

I WISH…

I SHARE…

Through words and drawings, KOFA children express their thoughts: I WISH… I SHARE… Perhaps their answers are simple: a wish, a story, a blessing, or simply a warm “Hello.” But these simple expressions show us something beautiful: children do not need complicated ideas to begin understanding the world. They can start with one moon. They can imagine friends far away, express their wishes, and learn to share their own stories with the world.

From a pair of little hands to one bright moon. From a Chinese story to an exchange of cultures. From “This is my culture” to “I want to share it with you.”

Children are slowly discovering a bigger world in ways they can understand.

This is also what we hope APEC 2026 × UNDER ONE MOON can bring to children—not to teach them complicated international issues, but to let them experience, through meaningful and authentic activities:

OPENNESS-Seeing Differences: Being willing to meet different people and listen to different stories.

INNOVATION-Creating with Courage:Using their own hands, ideas, and expressions to create new possibilities.

COOPERATION-Creating Together:Learning to cooperate and share, while understanding that every contribution matters.

May children begin with their own culture, look at differences with curiosity, understand one another with respect, and connect with the world through sharing. Because the future is not only about recognizing our differences. It is also about seeing one another, understanding one another, and creating our shared future together.
