Sias IS celebrated Literacy Week during the week of October 24th. The theme for this year was “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.” According to UNESCO, this theme will serve as, “an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy and learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.”
Undeterred by the Covid lockdown, we transformed our celebrations to online learning activities. Sias IS parents supported and worked together with teachers to create strong memories for our students.
Throughout Literacy Week, students participated in “Drop Everything and Read” (D.E.A.R) time. When given the announcement, everybody dropped what they were doing and read for 5-10 minutes. Students and staff also participated in “Hungry Caterpillar Reading Collage”. Students created a massive collage of book covers that they are currently reading and posted them on Padlet. In addition to the whole week activities, we planned different activities for each day to ensure students were engaged.
Monday’s activity was “Guess Who”. Photos of staff members with a book covering their faces and another revealing their faces were collected and shared in Homeroom classes. Students had to guess who the staff member was that was hiding behind their book! Students were also inspired to take “Guess Who” photos of their own and share with family and friends.
Tuesday’s activity was “Staff Read Aloud”. Forty non-instructional staff members recorded themselves reading their favorite stories to share with our students. Many of the staff were not recognized by students, so the KG class extended the activity to invite staff members to join their“Chew and Chat” online party so they could get to know them!
Wednesday’s activity was “Pajama Day”. All students and teachers spent the day in their pajamas and had time reading in their cozy spots!
Thursday’s activity was “Literacy Scavenger Hunt”. Students collected images of Literacy around their home. This activity, especially for EY students and lower PY students, drew their attention to all the literacy that surrounds us!
Friday’s activity was “Book Character Day”. This has always been the students’ favorite activity. They dressed up as their favorite book character at home and had an online “Fashion Show” where each student displayed their costume and background.
Literacy week was extremely successful. Despite needing to be online, we heard incredible feedback from teachers, students, and parents. The Sias IS Literacy Committee will continue building a community of readers through innovative programs and engaging literacy practices.
阅读周活动举办的非常的成功。尽管需要在线上进行,但我们从老师,学生和家长那里听到了非常积极的反馈。Sias IS 阅读委员会将会继续通过创新项目和举办更多的互动阅读实践来建立阅读者社区。
