On July 7, ASJ Student Development Centre teachers David and Cindy led Student Union President Wang Yuqiao, Vice President Maltreat Boer, Head of Life Department Li Yanze, Head of Learning Department Huang Xinxiao, Head of Outreach Department Huang Siyin, House Captain Shi Yingyu, and Bainieri Heron to the Tianxin Town Central Primary School in Longchuan County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province, to donate their love and care to the mountainous children of the school.
The head of the Student Union's Outreach Department, Siyin Huang, took the lead in contacting the Tianxin Town Central Primary School in Longchuan County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province, and the following is what Sylvia Wong shared about the donation activity.
Tianxin Township Central Primary School is divided into two campuses, the village and the township Students up to grade 4 stay in the village campus, while students from grade 4 to junior high school go to the township campus.
Headmaster Yang took some photos of the village school district and sent them to us. As you can see from the photos, the classrooms are a few bungalows nestled in a short fence and long grass up to the calf's belly. The school's wall coverings had all fallen off extensively, the only remaining white walls were covered in black mould, and green moss was crawling around the classroom plumbing, corners of the walls and floor cracks. Therefore, we decided to purchase some just-needed supplies for the school, such as sports equipment, stationery and fans.
When we arrived at Tianxin Township Central Primary School, we saw that the school did not have a playground or a running track, nor did it have a basketball court or a ping-pong table. I passed by the bathroom and saw that although it was not lit, it was very clean and had no odour.
We then visited the sixth grade classroom, which had some mould on the walls and the walls were not quite level. There was no air-conditioning in the classroom, only a few fans. Although the environment was relatively simple, the classrooms were neatly arranged and we could feel the dedication of the teachers and students.
Due to time constraints, we didn't visit the dormitory, but Principal Yang's list of supplies mentioned that the dormitory was in dire need of some ceiling fans. The day we visited, the sun was hot and the temperature was comparable to that of Guangzhou, so we didn't know what to do in the summer if the dormitory didn't have a fan, but Principal Yang said that the temperature at night would be a bit cooler.
At the entrance of the school, we had a simple donation ceremony. Members of the Student Council and House Captain transferred the file bags filled with stationery to the students of Tianxin Township Central Primary School, whose eyes shone with gratitude and said to us, "Thank you, sister and brother". I felt very warm and gratified. Their clothes, though looking somewhat washed out, were still neat and tidy, and their tanned wheat-coloured skin looked healthy and energetic.
After the donation ceremony, Teacher David from the Student Development Centre shared some of his insights and feelings with us. He commended us for organising the charity event and following up on every aspect of the donation campaign, while encouraging us to go further in our charity activities and involve more people.
The charity event made me appreciate the resources and conditions around me even more. Although we enjoy a better learning and living environment, we still have to realise that there are places where children do not have the same opportunities and conditions. I hope to continue to participate in similar charity activities to provide help and support to more people in need. Through our efforts, more people can feel the friendship and warmth, and together we can create a better society.
